Bye Bye EVDO, Hello LTE (and no GSM)

Interesting article in BoyGeniusReport on future of Verizon Network. The Omnia will become an obsolete phone for high-speed Internet access as EVDO is slated to go away. CDMA/1xRTT will be around for a while.

Verizon Wireless to accelerate LTE, keep CDMA and lower data prices : Boy Genius Report

I think it will take some time before EVDO goes away. Doubtful it will vanish in a year or two. They have too many phones that work with it now. I don't know about you, but my Omnia will probably be gone within 2 years.....

Ha I just got EVDO service within the last year where I live so I doubt I'll see LTE for at least 5 years.

But the pinch might be that Vzw stops selling EVDO devices and starts sellling LTE devices - so it'll be interesting to see how it all develops.

It's unlikely they'll pull EVDO devices any time soon. Verizon's been experimenting with software/hardware that will let them run their current CDMA network and LTE over the same spectrum and dynamically shift spectrum to the protocol that's seeing higher traffic according to some analysts I respect. As the existing CDMA traffic falls off, more spectrum will go to the LTE network. But they aren't about to pull the plug on millions of customers and force them to upgrade, nor are they likely to give folks a reason to switch and not pay their termination fees (dropping EVDO would probably constitute a change in contract terms).

VZW will have EVDO until they've a clear road map to LTE, and even then for a while until they can afford to dump it.
