WIFI unlock

I went to the local cell carrier and was asking a lot about different smartphones. But there is one thing that I want and that is a smartphone with wifi but I don't want to pay for the data package. I want to be able to go home and use the phone to get on the internet using my home isp and not be charge for being on the internet. However every phone they were telling me about all had wifi but in order to get on the internet I would have to pay. Is there a smartphone I can get on the internet with and not be charged. Like at work and home I have wireless internet or if I travel I want to be able to get on the internet where they have wifi.

So what sort of phone allows this without having to pay a monthly charge to my phone carrier? When I asked the sells guy he said well you see we want to sell that data package for $30 a month so we don't have phones with the capabilities of getting on the internet without charging you.

Your carrier's people are probably full of dung. Unless they've really crippled the phone, WiFi should work just fine without a data package. If you're on a GSM carrier, you could easily pick up an unlocked phone from a third party or install a custom ROM and just buy a voice package. You won't be able to use any data functions without the WiFi active, but that's your desire.

Now if you buy a phone from the carrier that has WiFi, they may require the data package for a certain period to offset the subsidy they give you to reduce the cost of the phone. But there's no reason that you shouldn't be able to access the Internet without a data package on WiFi unless they've really mucked the phone up. And then you probably don't want to deal with them anyway.
