I recently read a thread about nocharge.com as a way to get slow but free broadband access on Sprint or something. I was wondering if anyone uses this with Verizon? I dont really need a dataplan, but it would be nice to check my email if absolutely necessary.
I have spent all day searching around for ways to connect via my Treo 700W (Verizon) to a FREE Internet Service Provider.
Can't afford and don't need the expensive Verizon Data plans, just want occasional use of the internet (no matter how damn slow it is), and most importantly - like any cheapskate - I don't want to pay a penny.
So far I have been trying to use nocharge.com 's domain, and NW phone numbers. I keep getting the message.
"No modem at above number."
I'll continue searching around, so far all I have heard are rumors, people saying they have (without providing proof), and dead ends.
"Access is free in local calling areas where NoCharge service is provided. If you must dial long distance to connect to NoCharge, the only cost for connection and usage of the NoCharge service is the regular long distance toll billed by your long distance carrier. If you are attempting to connect from outside the NoCharge service area, you will hear a fast-busy signal and the call will not be completed. "
The above is quoted from nocharge.com's front page. They do say you would be charged LD by your carrier but then continue to say if you call from outside their service area, you get fast-busy and "call will not be completed".
I guess if you are not in the Northwest or New England area, they won't accept your call by giving you a busy tone.
Thank you for your reply, I actually do live in Washington, just don't have an access number with the same area code as my cell phone.
I have heard of people getting through who live in California, also I have heard that some people block their caller id some how and that lets them connect from anywhere.
I made a more in depth post in the Treo 700W/wx forums about this issue, here is the copy and paste of what I have done with various ISP sites to get it to work.
Thanks for the help
I have been relentlessly trying to connect to various FREE Dial-up internet service providers and have gotten close but still am not able to connect successfully.
Carrier is Verizon, I have no data plan, I do have a data block on (which shouldn't be a issue...)
I have using the following Free ISPs:
FREE Internet ACCESS FOR SEATTLE @ NOCHARGE.COM
Free Dialup - Michigan (MI)
FreeDialup.org - Free Dialup Internet - Surf Free or Die from the hearts of New Hampshire...
and MetConnect - New York City's Free ISP
Each of these do not require you to have software to connect.
Michigan based access number, one I used 517 828 0769
another: 517 283 8769
freedialup specifies username: anything
password: anything you want
access numbers near rhode island, one I used 413-728-4444
So you see I have been busy trying to get this to work: each time on my phone after setting it up under new connection, using the cellular line as the modem:
It seems to connect just fine, says its in the connecting process for usually 1-2 minutes. Then immediately after that it says "the answering modem has disconnected. To check your connection settings and change them if needed, tap settings.
I have not messed with any of the other "settings," just keep it at the default settings for new connections, except for nocharge where I entered in the DNS settings.
If anyone has any advice, or if anything just try connecting to one of these for the hell of it, I'd appreciate it.
