Looking for help with connecting my PN-820 to my PC with the USB cable.
(It's a loooooong story, but...) All was once working fine then suddenly I could not boot my phone. (Yes, the problem started while connected to the PC with the USB cable.) The phone was stuck on the "Windows Mobile" splash screen, and even removing and re-inserting the battery would not fix.
So, VzW replaced the phone itself, (the new one has a "UTStarcom" label, not the Pantech one of the original) but now whenever I plug it into the USB cable, the "Found New Hardware" wizard pops up, and the phone is never recognized.
Have tried totally removing and reinstalling ActiveSync (both v4.2 that came on the CD, and v4.5 from the MS download site.)
Wondering if cable failure is possible/likely. The phone DOES charge via the USB cable with no problem, and most interestingly, ActiveSync works fine with using the Bluetooth connection!
I just can't edit the registry, move my preferred ringtone into the right folder, change the "Start" icons menu into a numbered list, or any of the other cool edits that make a SmartPhone so much better than if stuck with the carrier's defaults.)
I was able to sync up my phone until 12/17 and now Vista cannot find the drivers for it. I tried the uninstall and reinstall. I tried to update the software from Verizon. Used the CD and no luck. Are we both in the same boat?
Not sure if our situations are due to the same cause(s) or not.
I had (in rerospect, foolishly) asked my IT dept. to do a complete re-build of my PC for other reasons. They would have blown away the entire HDD and installed our "standard image" of XP Pro SP2, Office 2007, and the corporate utilities (AV, asset tracking, etc.)
My connection problems started when I got my laptop back, installed ActiveSync 4.5, and plugged my PN-820 into the USB cable. That was exactly a week ago, on Dec 12.
What happened was a lock-up of the phone. Could not even turn it off using the "End" key. Removed and re-installed the battery, but that resulted in getting the "Verizon Wireless" logo, then being stuck on the "Windows Mobile" splash screen. After several cycles of this I left it "on" for 30 minutes, but still no boot.
I did discover that if I held the "End" key for about 15 seconds, nothing appeared to happen, but then when I released it, the "Unlock" label would appear. Although pressing the soft key did NOT bring up the little window, entering my PIN would then result in a shutdown.
Called VzW and explained that phone would not start or shut-down properly, and after a bunch of "Did you try...? Oh, that needs it to be at the home screen..." troubleshooting attempts, they replaced the handset.
Using an SD adapter to get the files from my PC, I've manged to move the most important ones (ringtone and regedit!) to the appropriate locations, and get things mostly back to the way they were
As noted in the orginal post, I cannot rule-out some kind of physical damage to the cable itself, and have ordered a replacement. Will post the results after I try it.
BTW: Does your BT connection work? I re-established mine with no problem, so at least I can still sync!
my pn 820 stopped sync awhile back, first it was usb , then i set up a blue tooth connection, that worked fine for a while , then got errors ns wouldn't sink, the driver that came with the usb blue tooth adapter ws bloated and i never could figure out to option it just to launch the software to syncs the phone.
anyone know od a good bluetooth usb adapter for winxp that will work.
SOLVED! My thanks for the pointers from those who contributed them.
Not sure if there would have been another way, but I went the "Hard-Reset" route and magically, Activesync 4.5 recognized the phone again.
With the posting of the "Maintenance Update", which required a wiping of everything anyway, I decided to give it a try. Until now, I could live with having just the BT sync capability. Now I've got USB again as well.
Now, if someone could just post the Users Guide for the update...
