Based on what I have seen in the past. That really isn't that bad. I know the network offers more, but in real world, that is about what you get on any system despite the commercials they have on tv.

I have an aircard and can't get much more than 500K out of it but it occaisionally will do a bit faster. Interference and other things really slow it down. BUT the other services are much slower and in the grand scheme of things, that is still pretty fast. Uploads for me are usually faster, more like 150-200k.

But that is aircard. I have heard that pdanet is slower than the paid service, but you are also not "officially" using the network so it might have some logjams.

i did some traceroutes and my ping time to the gateway is 300ms which sucks, the network could offer a WHOLE lot more if they fixed the latency issues.

That is a pdanet problem. If you paid for the service, it would be better. I know pdanet isn't the greatest for the connection speed, but it allows you to not have to pay extra. Otherwise it is X bucks a month for the reduced latentcy.

As soon as my card contract is up, I am switching to the pdanet option, since it is still fast enough for most of what I do.

i added the tethering service to my verizon account, once i get a chance i'll hook it up to my laptop and see if there are any noticable differences.

Okay, so I have tethering setup and I've installed the VZ Access Manager on my laptop. I ran a speedtest and effectively there isn't a difference between tethering and PDANet. The speedtests are pretty much the same but the latency did drop to 150-200ms which could just be time of day. The VZAM is showing that my signal strength is only 22% even though the cell phone is showing full bars. So... ya...

David,

My phone streams video okay typically and generally my computer does too. I have even streamed like 10 mb files sent to my email and it has done a good job. Try and use the windows media player over some of the other ones available.

The latent issue is what happens with my pdaconnection also, like previously stated.
