GPS Apps for the PN820

So, I bit the bullet and picked up the Holux 240 on SD's recommendation, and so far love it!

What is the best Navigation software to use with Smartphone? What ones have you tried and would recommend?

I would like to try TomTom, but I can't find a trial anywhere. I'm kind of cautious on buying this without being able to try it.

The version I did find does not want to complete install.

So far the best navigation with Voice with trial is Wayfinder. It's not exactly perfect though, which is why I am looking for others. It downloads maps using thei nternet connection, so it doesn't have a large map install. Obviously if you ware out of signal for cell, you get no map. The ability to plot routes on the internet and then SMS to your phone seems perfect for on the go though.

Mapopolis doesnt' seem to be availiable anymore to consumers, and I heard good things about it. So getting maps for this software is probally doubtful.

Windows Live Search works great with the GPS, but no voice prompts. Google Maps seems to not work at all with the GPS since it doesn't seem t to have options to set it up.

Also check out Sunset GPS tracker which is a free app for collecting Tracking data, then loading the GPS file into Google Earth or Live Maps to see your trail.

BTW - I did end up breaking my Holux 240 on the first night. I used SirfDEMO to turn on SirfMode and didn't sync the BT/GPS baud rate. Fortunately letting the unit drain the battery forced it to reset it self and it's good as new

Is there a "trial" of TomTom 5 with maps around?

i think way winder is one of th efew ones left that has a free trial.
maybe mapolis will pop up soon resurrected and better. i like mapolis for my palm, for some reason the maps never stopped working.
i have been trying to download the maps one county at a time, would much rather just buy it

It used about 55mb of data yesterday driving around and messing with it, so that's not too bad if you have the data plan.

I'm not keen on having to load the map before I go somwhere, so something that is realtime maps is appealing. Though, not perfect. I have to go to Belgium next month, where I won'th ave CDMA signal. The maps would be uselsss if I could not preload them.

no data plan here so that seems out of the question, i wonder how minutes it would consume of regular minutes? you dont need a data plan to download the maps right?

I have been using the "Garmin Mobile 10" on both my laptop and 820 for the last month. The Bluetooth only receiver is WAAS enabled and uses the SiRFstarIII chip. Its output is both NMEA0183 and Garmin. The software includes both a W32 (nRoute) and WCE (MobileXT) version of routing software with voice prompts and route recalculation. The map and POI database cover all of the US, Canada, and PR. I only had a "small" 1G miniSD card for my 820 and was able to put FL,GA,NC,TN,SC,VA,PA,DC,MD,DE,NJ (my travel limits) with ample room to spare for music and such. The laptop has the full map database. I have also been able to use the receiver with Google Maps (820) and Mappoint (PC). I am very pleased with the performance of these products.
