PN-820 Maintenance release on UT Starcomm Site

Howdy Folks. I just wanted to share something I found this morning. I decided to hit the UT Starcomm site in a futile effort to see if a maintenance release had been posted yet, and much to my surprise there is an update in the download area dated 1-2-2008.

Here's a link.

http://www.utstar.com/pcd/downloads/...e%201-2-08.zip

Enjoy!

"Enabled capabilities to set saved pictures as wallpaper on the sub LCD" ???

If you place jpg files in \My Documents\My Pictures, they show up in the list when you go to settings -> front lcd.

Has anyone installed this maintenance release yet?
If so, does it go smoothly?
I know the instructions say that you have to reinstall programs that were added. Does it completely wipe out all the customization on your phone?
Any info will be helpful,

Thanks in advance,

The install will completely wipe out your phone as it overwrites the operating system and the radio firmware, no way around that.

I installed the update yesterday andonly ran into one snag. When I tried to install it from my laptop, the installer would hang when attempting to detect the current software version on the phone. Once I ran the installer form my desktop PC, it went without a hitch.

Finally, bluetooth and voice command work as they should have from the beginning.

Voice command?

Is voice dialing supposed to work after the upgrade? I can't get it to work, even though the upgrade itself went smoothly and the bluetooth seems to work fine other than that.

Wow, what a gift.

I suspect this will solve all of the complaints that I've ever had about this phone. I'm excited to get it home to try it with my Bluetooth stereo headset which has literally been collecting dust since I got this thing.

Plan to upgrade tonight, and swap over from my 512mb miniSD to a new 2gb miniSD that I just got today. w00t. Will post results later hopefully.

----- edit ------ update! --------

Okay so the install went perfect and quickly. It said it would take 20mins but it took only about half that it seemed. You do have to reconfigure all your settings on the phone, but that is a small price to pay. There are of course various software apps out there that will backup/restore those settings but I cannot confirm if and how well they would work.

For me, I have a few 3rd party apps that I reinstalled, but I used this chance to clean things up a bit. I also have a backup folder with all the CAB files I use and some other pertinent data, so for me to recreate my phone if it were to crash tomorrow would take me under an hour easily and I'd be right back where I started.

Anyhow, onto the meat. This upgrade is GREAT! The VC/BT functionality alone makes it worthwhile -- and the fact that it reads my txt messages to me when I get them is a super fun and cool feature I'll love, especially when wearing the BT headset. There are other small misc goodies like the LCD outer screen that I enjoy, and feel this is worth taking the time to upgrade. Enjoy!

Dirk, it works fine for me. Am I correct to assume you are trying to use voice command while using yout BT headset? Make sure after you press the button that you first hear the beep from the BT headset, but then wait for the "reply beep" in the earpiece from the phone acknowledging you can start to talk. That delay is a period where if you start to talk, it isn't yet listening.

It works fine for me with a very cheap (read: $20) Motorola BT350 headset, so it should work even better with nicer BT headsets. I've found VC works flawless with the new upgrades, and it even does a fairly decent job reading new message aloud if you so configure it. Nice!

Dang

Unfortunately, this doesn't fix my main beef with the PN-820 - the Bluetooth stereo (A2DP) stuff still stinks. It's odd because the Smartphone AKU Changelog mentions this fix in AKU 3.0.

Man. I was really hoping this would allow me to keep using this phone.

YES!!!!

The Bluetooth problems seem to be all FIXED!!

Voicedialing works with a BT headset.
No static with a BT headset.
Plenty of volume with a BT headset.
Voicedialing prompts are routed to the BT headset instead of the speakerphone speaker.

HURRAY!!!!

Lorennerol! How did you do it? You Wizard, you! I'm still wrestling with a Jabra X10. I get paired fine, hear the appropriate Beeps, even see the the microphone icon on my PN820 screen... but don't hear a doggone thing (dial tone, dialing, ringing etc. and... the phone doesn't "talk to me" with the BT headset like it does when I use VC and the "record" button to activate. All tips appreciated. MH.

Did you install the update? The Bluetooth stack that shipped with this phone is a total worthless bad joke. Since I installed the update I've used a Moto H710 headset and a 'New' Jawbone. The Moto set worked as expected as soon as I flashed up the phone. The Jawbone seemed to need a 'getting acquainted' period of a few days, but now it works well, too. The H710 can be had at Costco right now for about $40.

yes i need to do the update too, none of my blue tooth headsets work.
i also have a hard time with sync via the usb, and now have a hard time sync with blue tooth, which makes installing the update hard.
is it possible to put the update on the removable media card and then updating from the card?
