Failing Dub-Ya: T|W repair advice needed

Have a Treo 650, and it's OK.. but the T|W keyboard is sooooo much better for taking notes in meetings that I am loathe to surrender it.

It has been good for my e-mail needs and what little I do with the web away from home, until recently. Now, most of the time when I turn on the phone section, it locks up, even with voltage as high as 4.06v (as per ATool, after a power-on reset to force a recall of the voltage measurement circuit).

If it does not lock up right away, it locks up while sending/receiving data.

Did a hard reset, loaded NO new programs or data on it, running bare, it still locks up like this.

When I do a reset, battery is still about the same. I try again, maybe it works for a little while before lockup, maybe it locks up right away, when I turn on the radio.

Happens much less often if I have a 6v external battery pack connected, but, still, sometimes it does, then, too.

Since GSM radios transmita full-power signal at power-up, my best guess is the battery is weak and not up to heavy load.. but when measured at light load (other uses), it works OK.

GetHighTech has replacement batteries,

and the swap's well within my skill level.

But, is this likely to solve the problem? Or am I better off shopping ebay.ca for another unlocked dub-ya for my unmeasured $30/mo legacy T-Mobile account?

I am dubious that the modern-day Palm.Com can be trusted to repair it
to useful condition, and since they want nearly as much as a replacement, I am disinclined. But, I'd be pleased to hear from folks with recently repaired dub-yas as to how that went.

Thank you, kindly. On-topic responses will be appreciated.

No, I am not interested in buying a Dub-ya unless it's unlocked.
