Soon to make the switch from my 755p to Pre. Support page shows a micro USB connection for charging. I have a bunch of mini-USB chargers from other phones. I ordered Motorola mini to micro USB adapters for these mini USB chargers. Two different Sprint stores have told me that the Palm Pre micro USB port is proprietary to Palm and use of any other adapters or micro USB chargers other than those made by Palm will result in the phone shorting out. This sounds like a line to me as the new industry standard agreed upon in April, 2009 is micro USB charging. Before I try this out on my new Pre, does anyone here have any inputon this ?

I think any microUSB charger will work to charge the Pre itself. It charges (slowly) if you plug it into your PC. The PC negotiates even if you use a foreign microUSB cable.

What doesn't work is any other charger when plugged into the Touchstone.

Well I can tell you this. For the initial charge, I had to use the Palm adapter to get it to charge. I initially plugged it into one of my moto chargers and it just sat there at 40%, although the indicator said it was charging. I left it on there for hours. Then I pulled the Palm charger out of the box and plugged in the pre and it charged up fairly rapidly. Now.....after that initial charge I am able to plug it into either my pc or other chargers and it charges. Go figure right?

It cant be a proprietary connection because I just bought a Rocketfish (Best Buy brand) micro USB charger which listed the Pre as compatible on the box and an Ecosol Powerstick (pretty sweet) which both charge the Pre.

I bought a couple of Boxwave retractable MiniSyncs. They work fine for charging the Pre (both via the wall and via my iMac) and for syncing the Pre with my iMac.

What seems to be proprietary is the fact that the microUSB cable supplied can transfer data as well as charge: other cables may only charge. Some mini to microUSB adapters work, others don't

I had a microUSB car charger for my Palm 800W, however it did not work on my pre.
