Sorry for the video quality - but as crazy as it seems - go to the card view on your Pre (ie. swipe up from the right side of the screen) -- and then literally type into your keyboard this exact string:
"upupdowndownleftrightleftrightbastart" and it will bring up the developer menu. I have root access to the pre now - and am playing around. I'll post a follow up video.

* unzip it
* Go to the resource folder, find the NovacomInstaller.pkg.tar.gz file
* Extract it with tar -xzvf
* Install it (double click it -- Mac OSX only)
* Go to the /opt/nova/bin directory
* Plug in your pre to the USB port
* Run ./novaterm
SUCCESS! I have modified one of the Palm system applications, and created a simple hello-world style application that works. This phone is gonna be fun!!!
I would love to get a Pre, but there's not a phone in the world that will make me budge off my incredible circa 2002 Sprint family plan with free unlimited data and SMS on every line.
Now if we can somehow get Sprint to let me activate the Pre on my old plan that would indeed be awesome...

Yeah, I'm coveting one too, but I have a SERO plan and what little delving into upgrading phones I've done online they have always said "Oh no you don't! SERO was a mistake to begin with and if you think were not going to obsolesce you right out of it your crazy!"
Well, they didn't say EXACTLY that, but that's what they meant!

Scott...you're the man. Loved my i500 and your Skin Selector. Have been using an HTC Touch Pro since November and not thrilled with the performance, battery life, virtual keyboard, etc. Give me a clamshell Palm with a regular phone pad!!!
Bring on the Palm Pre hacks...how about a WinMo emulator?
i330, I had a pretty good legacy family plan also: 2000 minutes for four lines. In order to buy the Palm Pre, I just changed over to the new family all data plan. Lost 500 minutes (now 1500) I never used; but gained unlimited data for all four lines. Net additional cost: $30 per month.

$30/ month extra. That's why I won't be getting a Pre. That is enough extra in 1 year to cover the subsidy.

I'm in pretty much the same boat, I have two $30 SEROs and one $50 SERO. That's 1750 minutes of which a thousand go unused. The three line 1500 minute family data plan gives me everything on the three SEROs except for 250 unused minutes for $150. Still a good deal cheaper than Verizon!
When I call the SERO folks I found that they will not activate the Pre, Diamond, Pro, PalmOS phones or any other "PDA" phone they sell. I didn't ask about Blackberries but I've a feeling the results would be the same there.
They are obligated to maintain my plan while I keep my current phones, but they're sure not going to let me go ones second beyond when my first phone breaks.
So the question is, do I convert my plans now and open my options, or do I hold out until I absolutely have to?

I called TeleSales, and the upgraded(?) my three SERO plans to a "Referral Family Everything PLUS Plan" for $109.99 for two phones, and $15.00 for the third. The minutes are 1600 pooled, and unlimited everything else (except international).
That's a net increase of $15, and I lose 600 unused minutes. Since they're pooled instead of separate, it's not as big a loss as it seems, and I never used them anyway.
If you get the 25% employee discount from your employer, it comes out just about a push with a regular 1500 minute Family Everything Plan.
Anyway, I got my Pre about a month ago, and I'm loving it! The OS and the App catalog is still very immature, and there are plenty of missing features and bugs (well not too many bugs), but Palm is aggressively working on those issues. I'm expecting an OS upgrade to come out any time, but all in all there's nowhere to go but up.
The caveat is that all bets are off if Palm goes belly up. Recently it's been looking like they'll survive, but even if they don't their most valuable asset is WebOS, and surly someone will pick it up out of the bankruptcy proceedings.
At this point, the only thing I see on the horizon that might potentially be better is Android, and it's still not available on Sprint (the HTC Hero is supposed to drop soon but it'll be very expensive).
