unlocked pre?

can you buy an unlocked Pre and use it with Sprint? I have an existing account but dont want the required upgrade mandating a data plan.

There doesn't seem to be the option to turn off data use in the pre. It's sort of "always on" or in airplane mode -- there isn't a separate data/voice use like in Pocket PCs.

I balked at the plan because I'd been using my 6700 with no data plan and it was a huge expense to upgrade, especially since my father in law and husband just had voice plans too and didn't want or need data. That was annoying. I had thought I could simply pay $10 a month a piece for them like I'd been doing before, but they are now on a family share plan at $60 a month -- the cheapest I can find. I think I need to figure out something else.

Good question. Someone on Youtube got its phone portion working on Verizon, but no text or data...yet. Seems to be a similar method to how to get other phones unlocked..using QPST, CDMA workshop. Now it seems everything works except EVDO/3g data. Can't wait till they iron out everything!
