Palm has partnered with AT&T Wireless as the first carrier in the US to offer subsribers the new Tungsten W. The Tungsten W was rolled out earlier with a carrier in Singapore, and partnerships with Vodafone UK and Rogers AT&T Wireless have been previously announced.
The Tungsten W is a unique device in the world of pdaPhones. First, it is more of a data device in that you can't talk on the phone without an earbud. Second, it is one of the few Palm-based pdaPhones to run Palm OS 4.11. And, it differes from the rest of the Palm OS 5.0 based Tungsten line in that it has a built in keyboard, rather than a sliding panel to reveal a Graffiti area.
Palm has added some nice features to this pdaPhone, including a tri-band GSM/GPRS radio that AT&T will take advantage of, to allow international roaming in some countries. It also has a Secure Digital expansion slot available. Palm is planning to make available a flip cover in the April timeframe that will include a speaker and microphone. This accessory should make the Tungsten W more usable as a primary mobile phone.
The Tungsten W will retail for $549, about the price of other competing pdaPhones on the market today, and you will be able to order it soon from the
Palm website. Beginning on February 28, it will be available in retail stores such as CompUSA and Franklin Covey. AT&T Wireless does not plan to offer it in its own stores initially.
