Seidio Announces G2500 GPS-in-the-Box for Treo 600
Seidio has just announced an exciting new product that will surely be a hit for Treo 600 owners that spend a lot of time in the car. They've bundled my favorite mapping and navigation softare, Mapopolis, with their powered car kit and a GPS receiver. Here is their announcement text:
"Now you can get everything you need for your GPS application in one box. The G2500 GPS-in-the-box includes everything you will need to setup/start your GPS application. Included is an easy-to-read, step-by-step manual which will guide you through your setup and start your GPS system.
The Seidio G2500 GPS-in-the-box provides you with these added benefits: - Seidio G2500 Car Kit - Listen to GPS commands or audio books through the built-in amplified speaker. This car kit is also used as a hands-free speakerphone while driving.
- Seidio SGR-300 wired receiver – Based on an improved version of the SIRF Star Chipset. The receiver can be plugged into the G2500 Car Kit without having to plug in any additional cables.
- Mapopolis Navigation software – Using this software, you will be able to generate door-to-door driving directions, add personal or business locations, reroute automatically if you miss a turn, and more.
The combination of the Seidio G2500 Car Kit, Seidio SGR-300 wired receiver and Mapopolis Navigation software offers and ensures the best performance for your GPS application.

Will it work with the 650 as well?
|
|
|
|
|
|
No! The 650 has a different connector configuration.
I wouldn't doubt that Seidio will be quick to market a compatible version.
I was thinking of upgrading to the 650 until I learned all of my current accessories (except headset) will be incompatible.
-Thanks PalmOne!

This sounds very nice! My wife just got a new Honda Odyssey with built in navigational system. GPS navigation is very cool! When we were taking our daughter to summer camp, in the mountains in up-state New York, the navigational system even was able to locate dirt roads in remote mountain locations. Very impressive! I'm not sure Mapopolis will be that complete, but I'm very impressed with the GPS navigational technology in general.

The Seidio approach appears far more elegant.

a few quick questions about this:
1) does G2500 GPS-in-the-Box for Treo 600 do turn by turn as you are driving?
2) what downloads are necessary to stay up to date?
3) what areas are covered?
4) any sound?
Thank you

let me reword one question: do you have to download directions before you leave your house (from PC) or can you put in destination from your location (at that time) and get taken there?

The Mapopolis navigational software does give you turn-by-turn audible prompts. To get a more detailed description of the capabilities of the software, visit their web site...

I have used Mapopolis for quite a while, and I like it a lot. MOST of my experience with it, however, is on the Pocket PC platform which is a little better for this kind of thing because of the larger display and multitasking. That said, I think I can answer your questions. You can do turn by turn instructions during navigation. The way it works is that you put in your starting point and destination first. You can select each from a variety of ways... GPS, Address, Point of Interest, Favorite, Point on the Map, etc. Then it calculates the route and has both text instructions, and guided instructions. If you chose to be guided, then it splits the screen and shows the next instruction with an arrow at the bottom, while showing a moving map on the top. If you have instructions that will be in close succession, it further splits the bottom of the screen to show you both instructions.
This only works if the maps are loaded on your device ahead of time. Mapopolis divides their maps by county, and then there is a statewide highway map. You will need to put them on an SD card, so it really depends on how big your card is, whether you can keep everything on there. What I do is keep about 6 counties that I frequent, on my card all the time. If I plan to take a trip, then I figure out which counties and highway maps I need, and load them. You are best to keep the number of maps to a minimum because it effects some things like memory space, and speed. For example, when searching for a point of interest, you end up with a lot larger list for it to search.
One thing to check on before ordering is which Mapopolis you get, as they have a huge selection of options. I would guess that this is a 1 year subsription to the Palm OS Navigator, which sells for $99, but please make sure before you order. You can also find out from Mapopolis about upgrades to the software and maps. The way Mapopolis works is that their software is free, but you pay for the different map options, and they have a lot of them.

Seido G2500 Treo 600 Verizon
I just received my G2500 for use with my Verizon Treo 600. The audio from it's (the 2500) internal speaker is fine. However the people I am speaking with hear a loud and annoying echo. I tried using the external mike which I placed over my visor, far from the 2500 - yet there is no difference with the echo. I beleive it is an electronic echo created in the duplexing of it's internal amplifier.
Does anyone else have any comments on this that may be helpful.
Also, I can not find where to plug in an earbud HF as tnere are two jacks, one on top next to the GPS rj jack, and that is labeled SPkr the other jack is just above the ovlume control on it's side. That too does not work for the earbud type HF. I have several of those earbuds that work fine with the treo alone, but none when it it in the 2500 cradle. My email is k2mmt@arrl.net

I have the same problem. It's a great product (very nice holder for the phone, very clean, etc.--a vast improvement over the "official" car kit from THB).
However there seems to be a design problem. Seidio informs me:
"For G2500, the external microphone goes into the jack above the volume control. the ear piece goes into the jack at the top marked SPK"
However, the only way to hear the speaker is by turning up the volume, which creates feedback from the microphone (the echo). So you have to turn down the speaker completely to eliminate it. Catch-22. Also, there does not seem to be a way to switch between speakerphone mode and headset mode. There should be an external speaker jack as on other car kits, so you can place the speaker in a remote location (under the dash). That would eliminate the feedback. There should also be a jack for an external microphone, and a separate one for the headset, and the switch should select between headset mode and speakerphone mode.
I hope Seidio is reading this...

Thanks for letting me know that I am not alone. Mine came with an extrernal mike as well as one of these ear-bud handsfree things. Neither works in either of the two jacks. One on top the other above the volume control. The photo shows an ext. mike in the upper jack, but it says SPKR oddly enough.
I called SEIDO and the nice lady said she understood the compaint and said they will replace it. So le't see.
ALSO on another but related subject, I am looking into the Mapopolis software for the Treo and the GPS rcvr that came with the 2500 - has anyo had any eperience with this yet?

I couldn't resist - Where is "whales" (sic)? Is that a place where Moby Dick resides?
Maybe your boss would find Wales better.

SEIDO & Palm Keyboard issue
I have blown up two Treo 600's using the SEIDIO G2500 cradle. It seems when you use the Palm keyboard the driver from Palm and the SEIDO cradle arent compatible. Anyone else notice this? My 2 cents is that this cradle is a piece of junk. For mapping the Treo 600's screen is really two small and resolution not too good. And as far as using it as a hands free, I often have to pick the phone out of the cradle and and speak into the TREO so people can hear me. Anyone want to buy this from me?

Hands Free Mode?
I am missing something obvious, I am sure. But, how does the Treo 600 go into "hands free" mode, so that sound (phone calls, etc) goes to the earpiece. I have a Jabra earplug that I connected to the headset jack on the bottom of the Treo, but no sound (phone calls) can be herad through it. How is this feature engaged - sound going to the earpiece?
Thank you.
