Samsung Showing the SGH-i505... what happened to the i500?

This is quite an interesting turn of events... we find out about a new Palm based pdaPhone, from our friends at MSMobiles.com... a media site that tracks news on Microsoft based pdaPhones.... go figure??? But let's not worry about where the information came from... let's just check it out.

MSMobiles is reporting from Geneva, Switzerland, at the Media Centre of ITU World Telecom 2003 conference. They conducted an interview with PalmSource and got the scoop on a new pdaPhone in the works from Samsung. This device is going to be selling in Europe in early 2004. Let's hope it makes its way across the big pond to the US as well.

The big news here is that Samsung has borrowed a page from the Sony Clie design book and has added a rotating display to compliment the clamshell design. You can use it as a tablet, or flip it over to close it completely, or open and use it like a clamshell phone. Nifty design for a pdaPhone.

Most of the rest of the functions in the i505 are what we've been following in our i500 forum here... just the rotating display is new. So the real question is, "What happened to the i500?". Aren't you supposed to release a product and sell some before you come out with the follow-on product?

To bad that Samsung said no more Smartphones right now. If they would have taken this device and made it Smartphone OS, I would have purchased it in a second.

What do you like best about the Smartphone platform over Palm?

I don't really have that much against Palm. My first couple of pdas were Palm (Palm, Palm Vx). This is a personal bias, I just like Mircosoft over Palm. For myself, I use the i700 and love it. I like the power of the device (although it would have been nicer with the 400mhz processor). I know that with Palm, I can still use Outlook, and use Documents to go for Word, Excel, etc, but I just like the microsoft OS and the ability it gives me with my job (real estate agent) with databases and programs. The Smartphone was going to be for my wife, who needs a smartphone (whether it be Palm OS, Symbian, or Microsoft). I am personally just more familiar at this point with Microsoft (and in this case Samsung) that the Smartphone was the better choice for me.

But to answer your question directly, I have never used or played with the Smartphone platform. I do not know if there is anything that I would like better or worse.
