I have had an i500 for many years.
The Centro looks like a reasonable upgrade.
I read that the Centro has a more visible display,
works faster, and is more compact than my i500
I was contacted by Sprint and told that I could
upgrade for $100 if I renewed for 2 years.
The post that it was possible to upgrade for just
the cost of sales tax sounds even more appealing.
Here are my qualms:
1) No Voice Dialing:
The i500 has voice dialing and it is very handy.
I know that voice dialing doesn't com standard with Centro
I saw elsewhere that voice dialing is available for the Centro,
but I haven't yet seen any program available that doesn't
charge a monthly fee.
Has anyone had any luck with any voice dialing a program?
2) Graffiti
The implication that I get from the posts on this board is that
Graffiti also does not come standard on the Centro, but
can be loaded into the phone.
The i500 has a special area for Graffiti
It seems as though there is no such area on the Centro,
and the display area seems too small to add space for Graffiti.
I am pretty good with Graffiti, and the keys on the Centro seem
inconveniently small.
How does Graffiti work on the Centro?
3) Signal reception
My i300 had an extendable antenna and my home reception was poor.
The i500 has a stub antenna, and the home reception is abysmal.
I literally have to go outdoors to ensure that my calls don't drop out
(and even doing that is only about 90% effective)
How does the Centro reception compare with the i500
The last problem might even prompt me to switch to another carrier instead,
even though I have been with Sprint for about 9 years.
1. You can use Nuance for voice dialing. I haven't used it so I can't vouch how well it works.
2. I've been an expert at Graffiti since the Palm Personal and could keep up with some people with thumboards. You won't miss it after awhile. The keys are well shaped and tacky so typing is fairly easy and I'm second generation with a keyboard (i500-700p-Centro)
3. Reception is fine. Have had no issues compared to my i500 in regards to reception.
You get a trial period so what would it hurt to try it out? You have what, 10 days?
For everything you can do better on the Centro with an improved OS, faster processor, more memory, microSD card expandable, EVDO, and so on.

1) I believe Nuance has a monthly fee(?). There is at least one prog that will do it for a one-time cost (under $25 I believe) and since it is compatible with Treo's its likely compatible with Centro (don't know, haven't tried yet).
2) Keys are small but I am still faster (after about 6 weeks of use) and more accurate on the keyboard than I was with Graffiti. There is a hack called Graffiti anywhere which you can find out more about by searching this board and I believe you just do graffiti right on the screen with that hack (again, never tried it, I agree with Crogs, I almost never need the stylus between the keyboard and the 5-way navigator.
3) Reception for me is better. Had problems in my basement with i500 and none with Centro. Went to a friend's house where I was always roaming with the i500 and had 3 bars with the Centro (he quit Sprint because reception there was so bad but he didn't have a Centro).
