Here is the condensed version of my 5-ish hours on the phone with Dell, Asus, & yes even Java(Sun Microsystems) in reference to enabling / using Java apps/applets on an ASUS A626 that I bought Nov 16, 2007 via Dell.
Short version with Dell: Their stance is pretty much "we warranty the hardware & the firmware/pre-installed software... If your having issues with 3rd party apps, contact the 3rd party vendor"
Short version with Java (aka Sun): cut-n-paste from java.com
"How do I get Java for Mobile/PDA devices?
Java capability for mobile devices is integrated by the device manufacturers. You need to check with your device manufacturer about availability of this technology in your device.
KVM, the virtual machine for mobile devices, is the counterpart of JVM (Java virtual machine). It is used to run applets and applications written with Java technology on mobile devices. KVM must be installed by the manufacturer. It is NOT available for download or installation by consumers."
Now here comes the funny part...
I called Asus next after reading the above on java.com AND calling sun & verifying its validity.
Me: Hi. I Have an ASUS A626 & I'm trying to find out how to enable J2ME, also known as Java Mobile Edition.
ASUS Tech Support Guy: Hello. I'm sorry sir, What is Java?
At that point I knew it was going to be a looooong phone call!
After talking to him, his supervisor, & being transfered to "specialty problem solving" department, the result was "We, at ASUS, do not offer any ASUS Mobile devices that come with, nor can use any form Java that must be integrated with the firmware and/or OS" and "Until this Java company of which you refer to, releases a downloadable and installable version of their software, we cannot assist you"
And yes those 2 statement are quotes, verbatim as best as I remember
If anyone has further information, I would love to know about it.
Thanks,
Karto
