I just got my new MPX220 but I have not been able to use activesync via USB. I have reinstalled the activesync software (3.8 ) several times and my laptop recognises the phone as it shows up in the device manager and also in my computer but when i try to sync it the device is never found. Can anyone please tell me what I have to do to get it to sync, i purchased the phone to replace my palm but i am yet to see the benefit in the purchase and am starting to think about putting it on eBay.

This is one of those problems that rarely sees the light of day....
So your laptop sees the phone but then it won't sync???
What are you syncing exactly???? You did not mention that at all... If you do not have anything to sync, then it won't sync at all.. Your laptop will see it..
One thing you can try is change the time and date on your laptop and sync it and see if the time and date on your mpx220 also changes.. It should sync to your laptops time and date...
But then you are saying that it does not sync, but then again this is not clear yet as you did not mention what you are syncing...
So it is not clear if is not syncing AT ALL or it sync's to your laptop but not syncing because you do not have anything you put to sync??
Uninstall the USB cable /phone from your device manager as well as uninstall activesync from add/remove programs. Reboot the pc, and run active sync install again without the cord plugged in. When youre done, put the cord back in the phone, plug it into the computer, and you should see the add hardware wizard come up. select 'not at this time' for the windows update driver search and install the software automatically with removable media or cd selected. The drivers should fly in. Then start activesync. It should sync up, follow the promts. You can also try from the menu on the phone to activesync, and also check your connection settings on the phone to make sure usb is selected. I had similar problems when i at first took mine out of the box, It took only a few minutes to resolve with the above steps. Dont toss it on Ebay yet...... they are actually really cool phones, the only gripes i've had so far is that they cant display an animated homescreen photo, and theres no capability to view or modify excel files that i've found yet.........

Thank you for your suggestions, I tried what you suggested yet I cannot get ActiveSync to detect the phone. I have uninstalled and reinstalled ActiveSync 3.8 and performed a soft reset on the phone but when it comes to running activesync it won't find the device. My laptop seems to find the device as it comes up in My Computer as also in device manager but when I try to create a partnership with activesync it will not work. This is driving me insane.
I would say check your AS settings on the MPx220. AS => Menu => Options then check your PC Settings. I have two settings, PocketMAC (for my MAC) and the other is my wifes windows computer name so I can sync on both.

I am wondering if you got a bad cable. It normally isn't this hard to sync. The syncing is actually one of my favorite features about the phone.
BTW, the Cingular branded phones come with an Application called File Viewer that can read (but not update) Excel files (along with Word, Powerpoint and PDF files).

I had this same problem and I have found that if you have the phone plugged in WITHOUT Activesync running (force quit if you have to via task manager) and try to access the phone through My Computer -> Mobile Device -> My Smartphone, as soon as you try to go into the phone's folder on the PC Activesync will start and immediately recognize the phone. It sounds strange, but I was having the same problem tonight and I tried everything, just like you, and I just tried it that way and it worked fine. After doing this, Activesync now works properly as well, connecting to the phone as soon as the cable is connected.
Let me know how this works for you,
Nik

Finally got it to work. Thank you for all your help after mixing and matching I finally got it to work by doing the opposite to what the instructions in ActiveSync say. I connected the cable to the phone, then connected to USB port on my laptop and then started ActiveSync and I have had no problems so far. It is a great phone once you get things to work properly. Pity the manual isn't as helpful as the people here. Thanks again.
I have a similar problem and none of the fixes have helped so far.
I have no problem connecting to the computer through activesync but when it connects it will not sync my contacts or any of the other items it want's to automatically sync. It will sync with Keep Track, a program I downloaded from handango.com. I have installed and re-installed activesync about a hundred times and I have uninstalled and reinstalled MS Office 2002 about three times. I have done all of the available updates on MS Office website but I cannot get this phone to sync my contacts.
I really want to do a hard boot on the phone so I can try to get a little more battery life but so far I have no way of backing up my info. I would really like to avoid having to re-enter all of my contact info on the phone.
