Hi, Everybody !
I am having difficulty in setting up syncronisation between my MPX220 and laptop via BT.
Over Usb cable all is OK (Activesync, sending files, vcard..)
Over bluetooth the link is OK (I can send files, Vcard...)
But with impossible to make synchronisation
My understanding is that in my laptop I should have the same port (4) assigned for activesync ...And when i make connection settings ... get connected ... it found nothing
I have: windows Xp and activesync 3.71
I have ugrade to 4 : No Result...
Like so many of you out there, I have been fustrated and angry about not being able to use my MPx220 Bluetooth connection with my PC ActiveSync. This is the solution that I found today to get the MPx220 to connect with my desktop PC using a Bluetooth connectionfrom the MPx220. Thanks to all of you who gave their advice as how to set up Bluetooth with MS ActiveSync, for using your ideas is how I found this solution. The following is for PC Desktop Windows XP Media Center, SP2 (which I am told is Windows XP Professional, but I assume it will work with the regular XP) with the DLink BT120 modem and the MPx220 smartphone, Version 1.30. The following is no guarantee that it will work for you, but I hope it does for I know your fustration.
1 On the PC desktop, remove your Bluetooth radio device from the USB port.
2 On the PC desktop, go to Start >Control Panel > Phone and Modem Options > Modems. Delete ALL of the "Standard Modem over Bluetooth line..." drivers. I must have had 20-30 BT drivers in this window with COMM ports higher than 9. Probably from installing the BT s/w so many times. This is the key to getting a lower COMM port number, in my case, I went from COMM 102 to COMM 9, which is an address that MS ActiveSync can see.
3 On the PC desktop, go to Start > My Computer (right click on My Computer) > Properties > Hardware > Device Manager > Bluetooth Radios. Delete (right click on the driver and uninstall) the present BT driver (in my case, it was the DLink BT driver). Also delete (right click on the driver and uninstall) any other BT drivers in the Modem, Network adapters, and Ports (COM & LPT) files.
4 On the PC desktop, right click on the BT in the system tray, in Devices remove the smartphone and any other devices that may be paired (right click on the driver and uninstall). Or in BT Devices, do the same (right click on the driver and uninstall), remove any pairings.
5 Optional: On the PC desktop, close MS ActiveSync. (I have tried so many options, I can't remember if I did it this time or not, but it will not hurt). You might have to go to Task Manger (right click on the date in the system tray > Task Manager > Processes > Image Name, and click on wcescomm.exe, right click on it, and end process. Do the same for WCESMgr.exe. This will close MS ActiveSync.
6 Now install the Bluetooth modem in the USB port. Windows XP will find new hardware and ask you to install it. Yes, do so using their recommended path.
7 Now to add the device (i.e. the MPx220), On the PC desktop, go to Start > Control Panel > Bluetooth Devices. In Devices, click on Add. Be sure your MPx220 is discoverable. (On the MPx220, go to Start > 8 (settings) > 8 (Bluetooth) > change to "Discoverable". Hit Done. Now in the Bluetooth Devices window, go to COM Ports and click on "Add" if the window is empty. My results were 2 COMM ports, one at COMM14 and the other at COMM9, that is the one that counts as ActiveSync will see that COMM9. Viola!
8 On the PC desktop, open ActiveSync, go to File > Connection Settings, check or activate "Allow serial cable .........." and select the COMM # that was active in step # 7. Click OK.
9 On the MPx220, go to Start > 5 (ActiveSync) > Menu > 3 (Connect Via Bluetooth...). Do not hit "Sync". If you do, don't worry, it won't do anything. The desktop PC ActiveSync controls the PIM Sync.
10 On the PC desktop, open ActiveSync; hit "Sync" on the icon bar. I hope you get the same results that I did. ActiveSync immediately activated and sync'd with the MPx220. It is faster than the USB connection and so much easier.
11 Now, if this configuration works for you, go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > Systems Tools > System Restore, click on "Create a restore point", Next > Type in a <file name>, Create a system back up with this setting so you can come back to this point should you need to.
12 On Restart (and I assume Shut Down will work also), you will have to go to on the MPx220, Start > 5 (ActiveSync) > Menu > 3 (Connect Via Bluetooth...) to activate the PC Desktop MS ActiveSync. Outlook does not have to be open for this to work.
The negatives are that the generic MS driver doesn't quite interface with the DLink modem. While I have great sync with MS ActiveSync on the PC desktop and the MPx220, none of the other functions show up on the Bluetooth Devices. Also the BT icon in the system tray is neutral, i.e., it is white, not green, showing no connection when there is one. I might install the DLink drive later, but for now the current setup is doing what I want it to, it is syncing my PC desktop Outlook with my MPx220 perfectly and faster than the USB cable did. (BTW, if I do install the DLink driver, I will post the results, but for now, I going to let a good thing be.)
I hope this will solve your BT connection problem. It has solved mine. This BT connection is very fast and very convenient. It is doing what I want to do, it synchs my calendar and contact list on the MPx220. I bought my first MPx220 in late November (yes, this is the second one, it has mfr version 1.30 vs., the .0343 I got bagged with in Nov.) and have been working on this BT issue since then. I just found this solution today, and wanted to share it with others who are probably equally frustrated from a lack of support from Best Buy, Cingular, and Moto.
I want to say I feel the real solution is in step #2 above, deleting ALL of the "Standard Modem over Bluetooth line..." drivers, and restarting the entire processs so that the drivers can find a lower COMM port allowing ActiveSync to see the lower COMM port address.
If this doc will help others, please feel free to post it anywhere that it will be helpful to others.
Good luck to all, and I hope this solves your BT problems as it has mine.
On step 10, I did not get the Sync button to light up on ActiveStink. It acted as if there was no connection. I'm not sure if this is related but on #7 I am not able to add an Outgoing port, only incoming which I selected as Com 5 the one that the device appeared on. When I try to add outgoing it again acts as if there's nothing there to connect to and won't add anything.

2 On the PC desktop, go to Start >Control Panel > Phone and Modem Options > Modems. Delete ALL of the "Standard Modem over Bluetooth line..." drivers. Keep doing this until you get a COMM port less than 10. That is the key so AS can see the device.

Originally posted by HorseRules I went thru the entire process twice, and ended up adding it as Com5 which is less than 10. are you supposed to be able to add an outgoing port?
I had tried 12 several times also with Activestink just giving me the blank Homer look. However I finally got it to work.
This time I went thru the process again, but I turned back on Discovery on the computer's bluetooth. I still was not able to add an outgoing port but it had the Com5 added as usual. When I ran the Get Connected from Activestink, I rediscovered the same computer from the phone and went thru that again, even tho it was already on there from step 7 before. This 2nd discovery appears to have been the key, tho I'm positive I tried it before. AT any rate when I sent to Activestink/bluetooth on the phone it engaged and is now fully connected.
I wonder if I'll have to go thru this again; if so I'd rather just use the USB, which gives the bonus of charging it.

All I can add at this point, is that once I got mine up and running I never changed any of the settings. I can say that the Bluetooth connection is great. I keep my smartphone by my computer all day long, and therefore, it is constantly being accessed by the computer when I change anything in Outlook. The only negative I've seen so far to the Bluetooth connection is that it tends to run the battery down somewhat faster than it did without it. But since I recharge my battery every night that is really not an issue with me. Other than that I find Bluetooth very fast, very clean, and very efficient.
I'm glad that you finally get connected and after a few days I'm sure you agree with me that the Bluetooth connection is a very nice benefit.
So far it has been OK. I have to reinitiate the session from the pda, but that's alright.
I would like to note here that under the PC Activestink connection settings, the USB is unchecked. perhaps it has to be for it to work, but like fairway trader, I am afraid to change it now that it's working!

I just want to THANK all of you for your contributions, especially fairway_trader, who spent some time putting down the steps for us to try, and... finally Bluetooth-ing.
Even though I had tried every single step before I came accross this post. I was encouraged here to keep retrying when I saw HorseRules posted updates while retrying.
I must add. For me, simply re-pairing my MPX220 did the work once I have confirmed I had the Incomming port - COM5 set up. My case was a new installation and had not dozens of COM's like others.
Great advise here!
Thanks again.

P.S. Yes, I agree Bluetooth connectivity seems faster.
Ive went over these steps 10 times, I cannot set my ActiveSync to detect serial ports, It always brings up this stupid connection wizzard. My phone, mpx220, when I go to the menu and press Connect via bluetooth, it does nothing at all. it says not connected. Ive tried for about 4 hours now to do this. you guys are my last hope before i just give up on this all togeather.
""""8 On the PC desktop, open ActiveSync, go to File > Connection Settings, check or activate "Allow serial cable .........." and select the COMM # that was active in step # 7. Click OK."""""
My ActiveSync always goes to some connection wizzard when I try to open it and when I close the wizzard and click file>connection settings it comes up agian. Please help, thats my only problem i think
I have my MPX220 synchronized with two computers now (home/office).
What I can tell you (and being redundant with the instructions already given) is:
1- Make sure you pair your MPX220 with the computer and not the other way around. I mean, initiate the discovery from the phone. You may say, I've done that already. Do it again (please). Remove the device (SmartPhone) from your "Bluetooth Devices/Devices" and pair (or bond) them.
2- Make sure there is an incoming port (mine is COM5 in both computers) in "Bluetooth Devices/COMM Ports". If there is none, simply add an incoming port, and Windows will create the virtual port automatically.
3- If this doesn't work. Disconnect your USB Bluetooth device and reconnect it. This will somehow refresh the drivers.
I hope this helps and DON'T GIVE UP. It has to work!
It will eventually.
It has to do it with the connection wizard initially. I would try to get sync working with the USB cable 1st, and confirm that you can actually do it at all. Then your connection will exist, and you uncheck the USB and try to get it to connect over COM.
Sometimes I have to reboot my phone and discover the computer again to get it to reinitialize, for the bluetooth. after several attempts it will let me back in.
Thank you so much! Now the only problem is my mp3 tones are really low, I have the volumn up all the way and can barley hear them. My mid tones are loud but not mp3. I dont have the latest firmware, is there a workaround this?
I had the same problem as everybody else. My computer doesn't have bluetooth, i have an older 3com usb plug. Used to have a sony p800, and had real trouble getting THAT to work, too.
But it's working now. What worked for me:
I got rid of old drivers and disable the bluetooth modems, (Dun, fax and Lan) leaving only the bluetooth ports.
I removed the old sony software.
I tried moving the ports to lower ports (I had been using ports 8 & 9) but that DIDNT WORK. I set them back to 8 and 9 again (my software wants one for host, one for client).
What finally worked was
1) resetting bluetooth ports to 8 and 9
2) setting Microsoft Activesync to use port 9 for serial connection.
3) Pairing (not just connecting) the phone and the laptop
4) DELETING the serial connection that the software then created
5) starting Activesync on the PHONE ONLY, selecting "Connect via Bluetooth"
and it worked.
Note: It will ONLY work when Activesync is selected via the phone, never when trying to manage activesync on the computer! And it is manual, that is I have to restart it via the phone whenever I need to make a new connection, I can't get it to do it automatically - which for me is OK because I only typically want to sync once a session anyway.
as posted before.
setting incoming port on BT devices in COM2, deleting pairing with phone, and pairing it againt. then selected sync over BT on the phone and started working.
