Help pairing i.Trek M-3 with Q??

Hi. I've searched but couldn't find answers for this problem.

I am trying to help my brother set up BT GPS on his Q. I sent him my used i.Trek M-3, which was working perfectly when I had it paired with an xv6600 and later a Sprint Mogul. But he is having trouble getting it to pair with his Q.

He's 2,000 miles away, and I am trying to coach him through it by e-mail.

He says that when he tries to pair it :

i get to a point where it wants to accept the gps, but then says

'.........not supported on the device'

...'please make sure the device is ready'... etc
I have a lot of experience pairing devices with Pocket PC's, but I can't seem to talk him through this for his Smartphone. Maybe there's some secret trick in to doing this in Smartphoneland?

When he tells me the steps that he has taken, it seems like he has done everything right, but it doesn't work.

Is there some trick that I'm not aware of to get a BT GPS unit paired with a Q?

I have not used this device, but my GPS requires I set the port to COM1 and the speed to 4800.
