Coming to a Moto Q from a 7135 ... a few ?'s ...
Hi everyone:
Well ... I have really moved up it seems from my 7135. Though I loved the phone dearly, it was beginning to show its age in more than one way!
I got a Moto Q, and have had it a few days. It's been OK, but it's done a few weird things. I did upgrade the software from Motorola's web site. I have Alltel as my carrier.
I have found that if I set the display timeout to any other value than "never", sometimes the phone just goes dead and does not respond to the power button. I have to take the battery out and reboot that way. It's happened a few times, and is quite annoying. I have the display timeout set to "never" right now, but the backlight stays dimly lit. I'm OK with this, but won't I burn out the backlight if I keep it in the never mode all the time. I've had it in "never" mode all day today, and so far, it has not turned off on me.
The other problem I've experienced a few times is a failure to end calls. I know that other members have expressed this same concern in other posts, but really didn't read about any solutions, so was wondering if this problem has been addressed. Even after I powered the phone off using the red button, the call was STILL connected! The phone didn't drop the call until after I started up again.
Really like the phone thus far ... battery life has been pretty good, even with the backlight dimly lit. I'm hoping I can work through these few glitches and get things working well.
Many thanks for reading, and for your replies.
Take care,
Michael

I actually just retired my 7135 and switched to a Q last Monday as well.
I discovered after a couple days that any time I carried the Q in the holster I got from Alltel it was completely dead within about 6 hours. If I carried it in my pocket the battery was 90% after 14 hours (and only one call that day). I plan to take that holster back.
Not sure about your display thing. I have the backlight set to turn off after 5 seconds and the display after 30, and that seems to work. Except for the fact that a picture slideshow does not keep the screen active.

The power issue does not sound 'normal'. I owned the Q from it's release (I now own the Q9M) and my wife owns one as well and neither of us experienced any issues with using the power management features. I have not found any other users reporting this issue either (some have reported issues with having it hard reset if powered off for several hours, which was fixed in one of the updates). I would call Altell and have their technical support people work with you on this issue.
The issue with not hanging up calls is also a rare issue.
Given the two issue, I would recommend trying a hard reset (make sure you have a good backup of any data outside of what you sync with Activesync, like word docs or application data), and if that does not fix it, get it replaced.
I really like the Q and Q9M, and I think once you get these resolved, you will also find it a great phone and PDA.
Rob.

Thanks for the replies! I'm on vacation now, and it has not experienced any of these issues since I left! No strange power offs and all the calls I've made have disconnected when the red button is pressed, so maybe it was just having an "off" day. I'll keep an eye on it and see what happens.
VERY interesting comment about the holster draining the battery from above! What could be in a holster that would drain the battery? Goes to show that ANYTHING is possible!

It just seems to be molded so that when its in the holster the holster is holding a button down and keeping the screen on. I just carry it in my pocket now....

I have the clear, hard plastic case, and the battery seems to be OK, although it's near death by the end of the day, and with light use. I fear I may have to switch to the extended battery, or buy a few more cables to keep the phone charged.
The issues I posted about all seem to have disappeared! Not sure what exactly changed, but the phone is behaving quite well now ... no incidents here as of late, so we'll see!
If anyone else reads this thread, do you by chance know how, or is it possible, to change how the Q notifies you for reminders that are set to X days? The reminder tone comes on at midnight of the new day, and it scares the bejeepers out of me when I'm asleep - can I change a setting and have it notify me at a different time?
MANY thanks!
-Michael

if you find the answer to that one let me know, the same thing is happening to me, and I don't recall that happening with my palm!
I'm also trying to find a homescreen that will show full day events and not just scheduled time appointments.
Posting at qusers.com, but so far not many answers there, this forum was always best with my Kyocera questions.

You simply need to add the code in the attached text file.
I put this just above the normal calendar plugin. You change the 'height' and 'h' values to match your other plugins.

Thanks Rob. Being new to the Q and new to windows mobile, I inserted the code, but now I've got the calendar icon over top of the text of the all day event (making what's underneath unreadable), and when I scroll down to it the whole screen gets a gray bar across that plugin.

You just insert it where you want it to appear on the screen. Each plug-in appears on the screen in the order it appears in the homescreen definition (which is an XML file, a script language that tells the screen how to appear). I have attached a sample screen that I use on my Q9M as an example. You do not need all of the plug-ins in my homescreen (for instance, the last plug-in is a custom program written for people who want the alarm displayed on the homescreen with the ability to click on it to change the alarm). Not to promote it, but it is called AlarmInfo and is supplied for free by MobileRob Home (sorry for the shameless plug).
Hope this helps. You simply need to edit the xml file (you can use NotePad to do this) for your home screen and insert the all day calendar plug-in where you want it, save the file and copy it back to your phone to the \Application Data\Home folder. Then change the home screen to use the new file (if you were already using the homescreen change to another homescreen and then back to the new one).
Enjoy.
Rob.
