That's fine if your system's not locked up. Doesn't work too well if you can't boot. I read somewhere (but don't count on it) that if you hold the "action" button and power button down for 5 secs. Guess someone could try it.
I find it hard to believe there is no other way to hard reset this phone if you are unable to get into the OS.
I have a device that will not boot past the Verizon Wireless screen and am looking to attempt a hard reset. Anyone have any ideas? Is it true that you can only hard reset from the software?
Any help appreciated......many thanks in advance!!

I believe they are planning to add it, but I don't think it is there now. It was not in the pre-release phones I used for development.

sorry buddy but rob is correct there is NO hard reset for the Q, the only thing they have is a master reset... so if you lock yourself out of the q by forgetting a password you setup then your screwed.. this is a security feature that motorola setup when releasing the Q... in the future from the 8 techs and my motorola rep that i have there are no plan on changing this feature either.. sorry
It seems to me that is wrong ... I've had mine without the battery in the box for several days ... and when I put it back in ... all was the same ... if I remember correctly ... the memory on the Q is like an sd card ... no power required.

No, pulling the battery out does not reset the device. The only "physical way" to reset the device is to kill all power to the device. This means killing the attached batter power as well as the backup power which keeps the VRAM alive. (This is similar to clearing the CMOS on a computers motherboard). I wouldn't recommend cracking open your Moto Q but there currently is no way to do this from the outside of the device.

This is not exactly true. There is a Master Reset in the Sytem Utilities menu folder that will "hard" reset the device. This should only be performed if you really want to reset the device back to the manufacture ROM state.

Actually with the new os that comes with the Q I do beleive there is a way to hard reset the unit without going into settings, etc, the only reason I know this is because I got stuck once, it was looping or something where icould not get into the system or to boot at all. I tried all sorts of combinations of holding down the center button with the green and red and managed to get a complete reset that way. very much the way one would do it with the samsung 730. it can be done cause i have seen it but where to find the exact combination of buttons to press I would not know, but try doing that if your having this kind of problem and perhaps some one else will know the buttons to press.

This does not work on mine: FYI, I do not have the updated software, though I will have it tomorrow, as I had to order a new phone. I'm disappointed, since I have had no problems up to now, and I got the phone the week it came out. Oh, well, it's a machine and it can break....
From a power-off state, press and HOLD the center "action button" while hitting the red "power on" button. You'll be prompted to reset if you want. From a power-off state, press and HOLD the center "action button" while hitting the red "power on" button. You'll be prompted to reset if you want.
I just tried this on my moto qc9....and it works!!!! just an FYI
