Friggin IMAP and deleting mail
Does anyone out there know how to delete mail or any workable solution for deleting mail from an IMAP server on the Q. Every time I delete a message it just comes back a few minutes later.... Even if I do a send/receive right after I delete the message.
I know there is some quirkyness with this but it should never come back after deleting it righ?...
Sadly FlexMail is not yet available for the Q...
Thanks for any help out there.

Is anyone else using IMAP? IMAP support appears to be hokey at best..

I used to use IMAP heavily until I started using a Exchange 2003 hosting service. For $7.95 per month, I get push email (using SMS currently). I simply have all of my third party email providers forward mail to the Exchange server.
So I have not tested the IMAP handling on the Q. However, on my i600 IMAP worked fine. I used to have several IMAP accounts setup on it and had no problems with deleting or synching in general. That was WM 2003 though.
You might try deleting the account and resetting it up. This will clear any issues with indexing of the email messages.
Hopefully someone who has used WM5 IMAP can chime in...
Rob.

IMAP has been working great for me. I have had no issues whatsoever.

So if you delete a message from your device it gets deleted off the server? Or does it just not come back?
On mine if I delete it, is just comes back again later. At least some of the time. It is never deleted from the server. I know there is some debate on this, but I would like this functionality.
Really quite strange. My ISP uses courier, perhaps there is some issue with that email server...
Thanks

IMAP works fine for me. When I delete a message from my Q it is gone from my server and does not show up in my desktop client.

THis came up in another thread, where Cruiselineguy was complaining about how he wanted to be able to delete from his Q but keep the original copy on the server.
I want to know why it doesn't work the way Outlook works, i.e., when you delete a message it goes to a Deleted Items folder and is only deleted permanently when you empty that folder. The reason I ask is that some handhelds make it easy to inadvertently delete items (My i730 was horrendous in this regard. It would do all kinds of stuff by itself. I never knew whether it was going to delete critical items or dial Timbuktu.)

IMAP4 implementation on PPC or Smartphones has been this way from the start. It does not move deleted items or sent items to those folders on the server.
To compensate for this, I used to set up a folder on the device called PDA Deleted Items, which synced with the desktop, and would simply move them to this folder instead of deleting them. Once you have this habit, it does not require more thought than deleting them.
I would also set up a PDA Sent items folder on the device and sync it with the desktop. I would then simply copy items to myself when sending emails. This would force a copy to end up on my Outlook desktop. I would set up a Rule to move items coming from my email account to the PDA Sent Items folder.
This worked for years until I recently decided to use an Exchange Hosting service.

jstpa,
For me it does work like Outlook works and the way I believe it is supposed to work:
1. When I delete an email from my inbox on my Q it goes into the deleted items folder on my Q.
2. If I go into the deleted items folder on my Q I see the email.
3. I can restore it if I choose which places it back into the inbox folder.
4. Once I click on send/receive it will them remove the item from my deleted items folder on my Q.
5. After it is removed from the deleted items folder on my Q if I look at the deleted items folder on my PC in Outlook the email is still in my deleted items.
I have just verified this. I am using an IMAP configuration and not a POP configuration.

A couple of points I should clarify with my previous comments:
1. I am using an IMAP account on my Q to sync with my Exchange server.
2. When I verified the email was still there I was using Exchange OWA to connect to my server and see the email I deleted in my deleted items in my mailbox.
The reason I am using IMAP is that I also sync via ActiveSync to my work Exchange server. This is the only solution I can figure to use since MS does not allow 2 separate Exchange AS profiles.

Perhaps it is a problem with the Courier server my ISP uses for IMAP4.
Here is my test and the results.
1) Send email to myself, I see it on the device and on the desktop.
2) Close desktop client to be sure it would not interfere.
3) Delete email on my Q, I see it goes into my Deleted items folder.
4) Send/Receive emails and I see the items disappear from my inbox and deleted items.
5) Send/Receive a second time and they reappear in my inbox.
6) Open desktop client and see the message has reappeared.
* I am running no other desktop program that might re-add this item to the inbox.
I shall go try with my fastmail account as well. Perhaps it only works with Exchange... Microsoft, go figure...
