Adding new ringtones

I would like to ask what format ringtones need to be in. I add some .mid files to the Windows directory but the do not show up as selectable ringtones in the sound menu.

Thanks,

S

I belive, you can add .mp3 format ringtones. I don't have a Q yet, but if it's a WM5 device you should be able to use mp3 as ringtones.

If you want to set a GENERAL ringtone, put your mp3 or WMA file in the WINDOWS directory. Then go to start- media manager, highlight the file and choose "set as ringtone."

To set different ringtones for each contact, I have yet to figure that one out. I am talking about when you open your contacts, open one up and edit it. It allows you to set a custom ringtone, but only the built-in tones show up. Neither mp3 or WMA format worked for me, if I figure it out I will let you know. For now I just have an mp3 as my ringtone for everyone...

My I730 with WM5 searches all over for Wav Files.. I put my 24.wav in my safestore and it finds it and makes it available as a ringtone. I would assume the same goes for the q.

Wm5 also did that with WMA's, and the Q doesn't. SO I'm not sure about that one, and I'd rather wait and see if someone else gets wav's to work, because WAVs are WAY too big to keep multiple's on the device

I guess that all depends on how much of a ringtone you want for the clip. If you wanted a Full song, ya.. it would be huge.

my simple 24 ring is 244KB

So far I've gotten a mid and a WMA to play as custom ringers for contacts. Seems they have to go into \ApplicationData\Soounds.

Both wma and mp3 files work fine, and I read somewhere that anything that Media Player can handle will work as a ringtone. Just move the file to Application Data/Sounds and it will be recognized when you set a ringtone for an individual or a profile.

My friend has a Q and we converted to Windows Media Audio file but when we transfered the files to Application Data/sounds...a. there were no files in that directory and b. when we selected one of the songs we made it would automatically go back to "none" after we clicked done. Any idea why it's not working? are there different kinds of WMA files?

Where is a safe place to get good ringtones? I tried searching the internet but it seemed real teeny-bopper and full of scams! I had an "old phone" ringtone on my i730 that I loved and would like to find again.

You might try converting it to an MP3. I have converted several ringtones I used on my i600 from WAV to MP3 and have not had any problems.

I have set my ringtone to a short wav file and it works just fine. BUT I have definitely noticed that the phone is a little quirky in setting it. You MUST go to Start > Settings > B Sounds > and select what you want. It works fine with wav files this way. But, if you just explore to the file, play it, and hit Menu > Set as Ring Tone, I got an error "The sound could not be saved. Free some storage memory or delete some sounds in Settings, and try again." I have tons of free space at the moment, so that's not the issue. This method, though, worked GREAT on my Samsung i700 (yes, I held out and didn't ever go to the 730).

I have not tried this with mp3 files at all.

Adding new ringtones

Anyone having trouble with the the drag and drop of ring tone files into the sounds folder? I have tried dropping wav, mp3 etc into the sounds folder, transferrring from my PC to the phone, I get a circle with a slash through it for my mouse cursor, when I try to drop into any of the mobile device folders. The file's are 2K-3K in size.

This should not be happening if you are connected and using File Explorer to do the copy. I just tested it on my desktop and did not have any issues. Try unplugging the device, and plugging it back in. Make sure that AS says you are connected and try it again.

okay, silly question is "file explorer" the same as windows explorer. I hold the windows key down and press the "e" key to start windows explorer, that is what I am using for my drag and drop.

Often simply holding the shift key while attempting to drag & drop the file (copying - rather than moving the file) will resolve this
