i am finally ready to take the dive with the phone/pda combo, seems like a good time with all the new available devices.
was hoping i could get some experts advice on the following points.
1) calendar function= palm seems to be alright, is MS any better?
2) ability to read/edit MS word documents=is it possible for a treo device to do this? can you buy the software? i read with the moto Q you can read but not edit? how much to buy the upgrade to be able to edit with the moto Q?
3) if i have palm data now on my laptop, can it be transferred to the moto Q?
4) i will be primarily be using this device for the phone function, calendar function, and for some emails. i value size greatly. i would like to be able to place the device in my pocket instead of on my belt. please offer you opinions.

You are asking a paradigm question. The 700p is a Palm and is supposed to be compatable with the Palm OS. The 700w is WM5 (like the Q). The WM5 devices are fullycompatable with MS Office. From the reports I have read (and I hope they are wrong), the Q does not have the pocket versions of word, execl, and powerpoint. That means the 700w would be a better choice if you need those. However, the Q enjoys a much smaller footprint and I am sure there will be ways to add that missing functionality back into the Q in relatively short order.
As for moving data from the Palm OS to WM5, that is a totally different question. The calendar, email, and contacts from Outlook will sync beautifully with WM5, but other Palm OS specific data is a different story and would require more research on your part.

Just to add some to perlmane's comments...
3. If you sync your Palm with Outlook, you can then simply sync Outlook with the Q and you have your data on the Q.
4. The email client is very good, close to the PPC version. The only limit that I have found is it does not support html in browser format. I use the email client heavly every day and find it quite usable. I would strongly recommend you get a third party calendar app, like Papyrus. The MS calendar app is okay, but does not support categories and has limited display formats. The task application is simply unusable. Papyrus and the like have nice formats, category support, and very nice task handling.
The size of the Q would allow you to put it in your pocket, however, it being a non-flip design, the screen might get scratched or damaged. I would recomment a holster or something similiar to carry it. It could be carried in your shirt pocket with the screen facing in, when needed.

Just be careful when you put the Q in your shirt pocket. Do not bend over or, ah sxxt! no more phone!

Keep in mind that the Q is the 'smartphone' edition of WM5, not the PDA edition. There is no touchscreen and many WM5 apps won't run. If you don't need the full functionality of a PDA, the Q might be OK. Treo 700p/w are true PDAs.

Not to sound defensive or anything but the Treo. running Palm or WM5 OS, is not more of a "PDA" than the Q. What you may mean is that they are more similar to a laptop than the Q, but a a device that handles Contacts, Calendar, Task, Notes, Email, SMS, MMS, Tasks, Multimedia, takes Voice Notes, views documents, etc., would certainly more than qualify as a PDA. (Personal Digitial Assistant) Heck, that kinda does sound like a laptop since my laptop doesn't require a stylus either!
