OK, I've upgraded from an LG8300 to the Moto Q9 and have suddenly discovered that I can no longer receive text messages longer than 160 characters ("enhanced messaging service").
I've been on the phone with VZW tech support (totally incompetent regarding this topic) to the point where they had Moto tech support on the line with us who confirmed that this phone can send enhanced messages, but can not receive them. I do think it can receive them from another "smart" phone, like a Voyager, Samsung I760, etc....but that does me no good.
Has anyone else found out any additional info on this issue and whether it will be fixed in any future software releases (since some have said it is an issue with Windows Mobile 6)?
I am certainly not an expert on this...but I did do a test from my wife's Q to my Q9c and the Q (WM5) allowed more than 160 chars, breaking it into two messages, which were received on my Q9c (WM6) as two messages.
Is this how EMS is designed to work?
There is a reg key that is posted on MSDN saying how to turn on EMS (which by the way is not turned-on on my Q9c. Here is the link if you would like to test it out:
That's pretty much what I had suspected- that a Q9 can send and receive an EMS to another Q9. However, the Q9 can NOT receive an EMS from another standard cell phone (like an LG 8300 or a RAZR, or a Samsung Alias), we only receive the first 160 characters and then an error text message immediately following.
I love this phone, but I find it hard to believe that my wife's ancient Motorola V325 can handle an EMS but this latest and greatest $300 Motorola Q9 doesn't. Stinks.
You might want to check on the adding the reg key in the link. You can certainly remove it if it causes issues. If you decide to give it try, post back your results.

Productivity software for Smartphones
I'm a total newb when it comes to Smartphones (I've been a C++ client/server programmer for almost 20 years though) and I have no idea how to install something on this phone.
When I plug the phone into my USB it appears as a Mobile Device and I can browse all the directories. I'm assuming I can just copy a regedit program CAB (not sure where to get one though) to the Q and then browse the phone using the Q's file manager and execute the CAB? Sounds too easy.
Resco has a free trial you can try to see if you like it.
To install products, some come with *.exe files that usually get executed on the desktop PC while the phone is plugged into AS or WMDC and they will install to the phone in one step. Others come as *.cab files which you copy to the phone and execute there by using File Manager and click on the cab file.
Hopefully that will get you started.
