It may not be illegal in Indonesia.

The question is: "What possible gain can be had by changing the ESN?"

'Cuz I, for one, can't see any benefit for changing the ESN to use it in Indonesia, although it would certainly benefit me to know how to do it....

I'm not so sure what he asked was against the law, either. He purchased something that is now his property and simply wants to be able use it in anothe country. Since phones don't use sim cards, his only option may be to change the ESN while in Indonesia and then switch it back when he comes back to the States. Having said all that, there are probably at least a half dozen things thhat he can do to the phone to grt it to work in Indonesia.

Unless the Indonesion provider has a similarly restrictive activation policy as Verizon Wireless there should be no need to change the ESN.
