I don't actually have Eudora on my 7135 anymore - I removed it from my ROM image to make room for some custom stuff I wrote - but, there are three things that I'm pretty sure it can't do that are required to use gmail.
1) Gmail uses a SSL (secure) POP connection.
2) Gmail uses a non-standard port for the outgoing SSL connection.
3) Gmail requires authentication to send.
This link gives an Outlook Express walk-thru for gmail. Here you can see the SSL settings and port numbers.
Eudora is simply not sophisticated enough to do it.
Unfortunately, the EIS browser is not sophisticated enough to access gmail via HTTP, either (but, you've already figured that out). The gmail web interface uses AJAX, which is a java application that is beyond the capabilities of EIS java platform.
