"1X" vs "D" icon in 7135 phone display

So, I just got my 7135 yesterday, and it seems to be working fine. I notice, though, that the "phone" display has never shown the "D"-in-a-square icon that the documentation says it should show when I get digital coverage. It does, however, have a black square with a "1X" inside in the upper left, an icon which is not mentioned in the docs. I'm presuming that this means that 1xRTT (Express Network) is available - but does it replace/subsume the "D"?

By the way, I'd like to thank the folks here in the forum, especially those who put together the FAQ - I found the information at this site invaluable in making my decision to buy the 7135.

Cheers,

This is an option left up to the carrier's discretion. In Verizon's case, they chose to use the 1X instead of the D. 1x means their 1xRTT service is available (Express Network). Since Express Network operates off of CDMA, which itself is digital, whenever you are in a 1X coverage area, you are by default also in a digital area.

With other carriers like Altell that carry the 7135 but do not yet have 1xRTT service available, the 7135 will display a D, not 1X.
