I just got the 7135 today and don't even know where to begin. It has to be one of the most confusing phones I have ever laid eyes on. I loaded the software it came with. However, I can't find the MP3 ringer maker. Also, for some reason the phone won't connect to my computer with the USB. I don't even know where to start with this....
How familiar are you with Palm devices? The biggest trick is understanding that it is a Palm device and phone co-existing in one housing and that the two apps do not overlap - you can be in either phone mode or Palm mode.
All the features that are advertised on the box (I assume its new...) are going to be found in the software. The initial menu has a few submenus, and its been awhile since I loaded my software & got what I wanted off of it, but all of the cool stuff like MP3 player, ringtone maker & Photosuite are in a submenu off the primary menu. You will have to poke around looking at stuff until you find which one is the submenu. In order to make ringtones, you install the ringtone maker and it sets up icons on your desktop. Its actually pretty easy to use ONCE YOU HAVE MP3 CLIPS SMALL ENOUGH TO USE AS RINGTONES (less than 200kb maybe).
Photosuite is not labeled as Photosuite. I think its "Media {something}" Someone want to help me out on this?
As for the MP3 player, you can install the management software, but I found it is significantly faster to load your SD card straight from the PC by dragging and dropping. The SD card has to have folders set up in order for the 7135 to read the files. One is PALM, does anyone remember what the other one is...I am not near my personal PC so I can't read my SD cards right now?
The directory on the SD card in which you place MP3s to play is AUDIO. To run programs from the SD card, the prc files go in PALM/Launcher.
If I remember right, the Ringer maker is in Start/Programs (not in a separate program group). As thaxman said, you'll need to already have just the part of the song that you want as your ringer in an MP3. I found that the easiest way to do it was convert the song to a WAV, and using a WAV editor, I'd clip out the part I wanted to use, save just that part as a WAV and encode that to MP3. That would leave me with exactly what I wanted as the ringer. Then I run the ringtone maker on it and voila.
As for connecting to the PC, it's fairly straightforward. Install the Palm Desktop software, reboot, make sure the hotsync application is running (icon in system tray with red/blue arrows forming a circle) and sync. If it won't sync, right click the hotsync icon and make sure USB is checked.
adding to what thost71 said about synching, I had problems when I first installed the desktop on my computer as well. Make sure you use the USB plug not the COM port to save some troubles. One of my issues in the beginning was the hotsync icon not being is the startup tray on the start menu taskbar. I used to need to go into start > programs > palm desktop > hotsync manager in order to sync. For some reason that stopped on its own - I think there was a conflict with Motorola's Starfish synch software for a differnt phone.
If the icon is in the startup tray (red & blue swirling arrows just like in the PDA menu), right click it and verify these settings:
Setup > General - Always available
> Local - COM1 & as fast as possible
For some reason, when I was having trouble it was always on COM3
I just grabbed the startup disk. When inserted, you should get a window with the following: "install Palm Desktop" "Additional Applications" (ringtone maker is in here) "user guides library" and "exit"
When you open Additional Applications, can't miss it: 3rd one down on the left (the one above it is Photosuite, by the way)
Boy this gives me cause to think! I think most people that get a smartphone have already been introduced to the PDA world in some fashion (Palm, PocketPC etc.) I can only imagine how confusing it could be getting a phone like this and never having used a PDA, talk about culture shock! kjh_2005 get ready for a great learning curve ride. Hell, I owned two PDA's over the years before getting this phone and still spents months discoverings its secrets!
On to stuff:
Sometimes the USB connections can be tricky on some PC's depending on the age of the PC and the other connected devices. I find Connecting to a COM port is a little more straight forward (less conflicts) though not as fast.
Read through the FAQ's there is a wealth of knowledge here and in the forums. Just about every configuration issues has been asked and answered.
Bag photosuite- its slow and you need to convert the photos to view them, and then they take up your Palm RAM. Intead get Acid Image (my choice) and store your Pics on an SD card.
Don't use the mp3 downloader... ittttsss veerrryyy sssllloooowwww. instead use a SD memory card reader to tranfer them directly to the SD card. and While were on the subject take a look a Beeboper, its a much better MP3 player.
Hope that helps.
