I am probably going to ebay my 7135 now that I got an i730. Given that verizon is no longer allowing activations of this phone due to the e911 act or whatever, I planned on noting this in the auction.
My question/comment. THis really diminishes the value of the phone, and probably makes it a parts-only phone, or does it? Is there any other value other than parts of this phone? It's sad, it's two years old, been babied, and now, seemingly worthless.
I normally really care for my devices and ebay them when I get the next... what do you guys think?
I didn't know that there were any 7135s produced before E911. When in phone mode, powered on, does it have the crosshairs symbol in the upper left by the signal meter (with or w/o a red strike thru it)? If so, it is E911 compliant.
I agree, it appears e911 compliant. It has the crosshairs, but Verizon says there is some glitch that makes it not compliant, and will therefore not be allowing re-activations.
Actually, I think you should pay close attention to the Treo 650 thread that mentions how Verizon in upgrading 7135 people to the Treo for free. Seems they do not want 7135 on anymore because it is associated with the ability to use 1X with plan minutes instead of paying for it.

Verizon seems to not want this phone on thier network that much is true but the reasons seem ambiguous at best. The phone is e911 capable (I think it was one of the first), wether it is compatible with Verizons network is unknown. But I have other older phones that I can reactivate on Verizon's network without a problem...and they aren't e911. Using plan minutes is a function of the features attached to your account not the phone. More than one member has reported that they got Vzw to add MOU for 1X to thier account with a T650s as well. Seems every few months it is reported that Verizon is offering yet a different reason to get this phone off their network. I don't think the actual reason is being released, and when it is... who will believe it given all the other stories...

I just activated my 7135 with Verizon a few weeks ago. I think if you sell it on e-bay there's a good chance someone will buy it and actually use it instead of just taking it apart.
last month i had to replace my broken-ish 7135 (sob sob) with a 650. the 650 was bad and i almost wasn't able to get my old 7135 re-activated. i received my replacement 650 and didn't want to de-activate the kyo until trying it out (which turned out impossible). the csr said it didn't look like the system would allow a re-activation of the 7135. reps may be very willing to try to activate the phone, but if the system blocks it, there wouldn't be any recourse.
i will also be putting up all my 7135 accessories for auction (PM me if you're interested) but i think we'd have to assume verizon won't be able to do a new activation for a 7135.
Under Phone Prefs > Phone Service > Position Location, there is a choice of "911 Only" or "Location On." Location On turns your GPS chip on meaning that when your phone talks to the cell site, it also enables your GPS positioning info to be transmitted too, which hypothetically your provider could post on the internet allowing friends or enemies to find you. You'll also notice the red line disappears from the icon. Leaving it 911 Only means no one can access it unless you are in "Emergency Mode" and then it is only supposed to be transmitted to the 911 operator.
the 7135 has Phase I compliant e911 services. Verizon has begun implementing that all activated phones must be Phase II, this seems to be the main reason for them no longer activating 7135's.
The law is soon coming that all activated phones must be e911 Phase II compliant, but Verizon is just getting a head start on it. The rollout of Phase II is scheduled to end December 31, 2005.

Phase I has to do with the carriers reporting the TOWER's position that the cell phone it connecting with. This has LONG been required and was likely implemented by the carriers with relatively simple software updates to their infra-structure.
Phase II requires greatly narrowing the caller's position, and required additional technology to be added. There were a couple of competing methods of meeting this challenge, some using various levels of GPS capability and some not using GPS (triangulation of multiple towers, etc). I think all US carriers have turned to the GPS based techniques.
The FCC had set the end of this year as the target for requiring all carriers to have 95% or more of their subscribers supported for phase II E911 calls. The carriers decision to use GPS based systems requires their subscribers to use newer handsets that have this hardware and software buit into them.
This has been in the works for several years. With the very high churn rate for cell phones, this is not as big an issue as if it were, say, cars. Most cell phones seem to be replaced every couple of years - some due to contract ties, some due to fashion and nicer features.
There can be significant financial penalties against carriers that don't comply in the scheduled time. And it appears the FCC will go after the money if carriers don't comply. Carriers have petitioned for extensions, on the basis they can't control when customers upgrade their phones. And apparently the FCC is going to stick with the schedule they wrote - FOR A CHANGE! After all, the carriers decided to use a technology that required newer phones, not the FCC.
The 7135 has E911 phase II reporting capabilities using a built in minimal GPS capability.
The 7135 can even broadcast its position to the wireless carrier at times other than during an emergency call - something that many carriers and developers of the technology saw as an opportunity to market additional services to subscribers based on their location. This is probably a major reason for the GPS based methods of E911 dominating the market.
This marketing feature spawned privacy concerns, and thus the 7135 can be set to provide its GPS based position info only during an emergency call. The symbol at the top of phone's screen will not have arc's (waves) to the right of it if set in this mode. Note that in this mode it will still provide the required information to the tower during a 911 call.
I just received my kyocera 7135 from e-bay and verizion will not activate it. do i need a supervisor or what? they say it is fcc law now that they can't reavtivate the phone
i just had an 30 minute talk with them. They admited that the phone is phase 1 but not phase 2 complient. But because of other network issues the phone will not be re-activated
