Alltel rep tells me I should have access to 1xRTT, but when I change the network preferences to 1xRTT I can't connect. How do I need to set up the phone to access 1xRTT? Thanks for the help
All Alltel customers have access to MobileLink (1xRTT), as Alltel calls it, but only if you pay the fee. You can choose the cheap plan ($7.99/month) for up to 2 MB of data (pretty much useless), or you can splurge and go for the unlimited plan at $69.99/month. Are you paying the bucks?
Alltel got into the 1X market after Verizon had stopped offering MOU new to data customers and started billing-only options, so unlike many of the Verizon 7135 users that are upset over being forced off MOU when they change equipment to replacement 7135s or Treos, Alltel customers NEVER were able to access 1X without paying for it. Verizon did it as a way of generating interest in a fledgling technology, and since V-Cast & GET PIX are 1X (or sometimes EV-DO) apps, they no longer need to "demo" it, hence the miriad of postings complaining. Alltel used to offer 5 1X plans, but market results had them drop the 3 in the middle and lower the price on unltd. 1X isn't bad, it will almost always be faster than a 56k modem, sometimes when you get bandwidth all to yourself you almost get DSL speeds, but it is not worth the xtra price unless you use the 7135 as a modem for a PC, as the 33Mhz processor is slower than the connection, causing botlenecks. My 7135 almost always froze when downloading HTTP websites on the screen. I could get about 3 pages before a freeze, whereas you won't get that problem using plan minutes connecting at 14.4k (but it also limits what pictures you can get, even with the settings unchanged and Java on. BUT if you want to connect to a laptop, 1X is worth it for the mobility.
The info about the processor being too slow for the high-speed link is good to know. I had some concerns about that in the back of my mind when I was debating about springing for high-speed or staying with the MOU QNC at 14.4kbps. Your comments have more or less convinced me to stay with QNC.
Several areas are or have launched 1x for Alltel. Anyone using it yet with the 7135?
How do you set up your phone once you get the service to make it work. I see the settings under the network options but havent quite got it figured out yet.?
Does it work like QNC, we all have the same log ins or does each phone get different ones?
These are all my settings to browse the internet using EIS on-screen. I used to use 1X extensively and recommend it for PC internet connection using the phone as a modem, but since the 7135 has a 66 mHz processor (I was wrong above) the faster 1X speeds get bottlenecked when the processor tries to put the info on-screen, slowing it down to not much better than the 14.4 QNC. The phone WILL NOT do broadband, in case you are curious - its just too darn old (at barely 3 years!!)
In order to use EIS with 1X, subscribe to Alltel's MobileLink, talk to Tech Support for your login/password, then change the setting listed below as QNC to 1X High-speed data and enter the username (login) and password supplied by tech support. The ONLY difference is the QNC/1X selection as the phone remembers the user/password combos, so you can toggle back and forth!!
OK as promised almost a whole month ago, here are my data settings allowing me to use EIS web:
Under "Prefs PDA" >Network
Service: QNC
User name: qnc
Password: -Assigned- (Talk to Alltel's tech support - 877-397-8462)
Connection: Wireless Modem
Phone: #777
Press Details... button:
Connection Type: PPP
Idle Timeout: Never
Query DNS: (checked)
thaxman, why do say you were wrong about the processor speed (33 MHz) in your initial post and corrected it to 66MHz? I can find no information about the standard processor speed being 66 MHz. Even the Kyocera web site says the 7135 has a 33MHz DragonBall processor.
