I use mine primarily as a modem for the laptop when I'm traveling. Occasionally, I use the PDA to look something up (address, phone number, etc), but it's kinda slow and cumbersome and I only do it when absolutely necessary.
There's probably a directory or two of sites that are formatted for PDA viewing, but I've never looked for one. Some sites have PDA-friendly versions of their content, as well. Google has recognized the need for PDA friendly service and has created http://www.google.com/xhtml , which is very handy when looking up stuff (check out the "local" search option - very cool). Details of their PDA friendly offerings can be found at http://mobile.google.com/ .
Another useful tool is Plucker (http://www.plkr.org/), a free tool that retrieves web pages/sites that you define and saves them to your palm in a pda-friendly form for offline viewing.
I'd just look around a bit and search the specific sites you're interested in to see if they have PDA versions of their content. You can also see if they've got an AvantGo channel that you can subscribe to.
This one is fairly neat, compresses regular web pages to better display on the palm: http://www.skweezer.net
This one is the American edition of the news by the BBC (in case you want to see what the world thinks of us and a different opinion on world news): http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/low/default.stm
Notably, I'm using Web Pro V and all these links work well. I usually find pages on the PC, copy them into a memo on the Palm desktop called "links", sync, then open the memo. If you highlight the address and press the green phone key it will bring up your default browser and take you there. Have fun!

(This program does not hang up the phone when it is done searching so you need to press the red phone button on your Kyocera after the search is complete.)
I just thought I would mention that I've substantially updated my "mobile portal."
Though it is free for anyone to use, the links on it are those that *I* use almost every week, or at least once in a while. It therefore reflects my interests and such, but at least you can be sure that if it isn't working for you, then it isn't working for me either.
