I am a Kyocera 7135 expectant father, having purchased online and awaiting it's delivery. I checked the commercial site and saw that it got a 7.4 rating out of 10 which isn't bad. I ran accross this forum and WOW, all the problems and issues are frightening . Mind you, I currently have an Audiovox Thera I am using on Verizon. Wondering if I have made a MAJOR mistake in picking this phone.
Give me your laymens opinion of this unit, should I cancel the order or just take a chance. Are the problems are widespread and severe as they seem?
P.S. Looks like there are some great people giving good advice though.
I have had the same 7135 since April of 2003. I have not had ANY major problems...as others have spoken about. Don't overload the internal memory - use the SD card instead to run add't programs such as Docs to Go. The forum consensus seems to say keep the internal memory only 3/4 or 1/2 full, no more, and that limits the hard resets.
In two years, my unit has Hard Reset four times. I use Backup Buddy VFS on my SD card and when this has happened I simply did a restore.
Now that I see Amazon is selling the units for $150 with a 2year contract (and then the $150 is returned via a rebate) I am thinking about getting a second one!
Happy camper here too. I've had mine for 18 months or so and the only problems I've had are ones I've caused. I do overload the internal memory (usually run 15% remaining or about 2 meg) and haven't had a reset in months. Once I weeded out the offending apps everything has been stable. I'm a heavy palm user and moderate phone user and with two factory batteries (switching one daily) have not had a hard reset in nearly a year. The daily soft reset from changing the battery out seems to really have stabilized my phone. Do get a back up utility (I use JKWare's Card Backup) and one called Crash (do a search here on the forums) as these really do help maintain one's sanity after a crash. Good luck!

Here, have a clue. No, take two, they're small.....
I agree with all that has been said. Soft resets are no big deal. I have been a heavy palm user for a long time and the more third party stuff you put on, the more likely this is to happen. I do backup... well, I don't Backup buddy does it for me automatically in the middle of the night.
I am very happy with this device. The only thing I miss from my palm only unit is the hi-res screen. The only thing I miss from my phone only is the size.
I am very willing to give those up for the convenience of the converged device. Especially at current prices
If you are coming from a thera to the 7135 you will be a little upset with the screen. But as a 7135-thera-7135 user i have found that not using the phone on the thera will make it very useful for a video player and make your 7135 your best friend! The 7135 is so much more functional and if it hadn't been for the fact that i abused my first 7135 i wouldn't be going to my second. I had mine for over 2 years and loved it. But i let mine get overheated by placing my phone holder in front of the car heater vent and overheated the memory chip and fried it. It can be a very stable phone as long as you respect the technology.
yup.. don t try anything too crazy, like talking on the phone while showering or something, and your 7135 will most likely do just fine!
mine works great i love this phone.
good luck/
I still have my original 7135 that I bought in April 2003. It very rarely gives me any problems. I've had very few hard resets (caused by my own blunders), and the soft resets I encounter are due to me using dodgy programs. All in all, I'm very satisfied with my 7135.
I love the phone! All phones that have more special features are likely to have issues. Even the Treo 600 has problems. But I can honestly say that I love my phone and it will be very hard to change unless kyocera comes out with an upgrade. Remeber too that you bought your phone second hand on ebay. Buying anything second hand is like gambling. So if you have any issues maybe its because you did not buy it new. I saw another posting and alot of people have been buying their phones thru ebay some have problems others don't. So it's a toss up.
These sorts of threads seem to pop up every 6 months or so and I'm always happy to chime in with a positive recommendation. Breeze_S is correct, many of the posts that reflect issues with the phone are from people trying to solve a particular problem. I won't deny that this phone has its idiosyncracies. I've had my phone for going on two years now and any problems I've had have generally been of my own doing. Not only am I happy 7135 user but I've not found anything out yet that can replace it in form and function.

Mine does what I need it to. I've had it over a year and its been great. Sure it lacks some of the power of newer stuff, but its works. I have had one hard reset that was not my fault and a couple that were from me screwing around (or helping beta a software package)
Sure its a large phone, everyone that sees it wonders why its so big then when i open it up and they see the palm, they think its the coolest thing around.
Just keep at leat 3-4MB of internal memory free and get an automatic backup program to backup to the SD card and you are golden. Even with a hard reset, you can restore from the card in a couple minutes and all is well.
fropm what i have seen, the 7135 is the best in terms of phone integration and form.
OK I gotta chime in too, although I can only echo what others have said. Generally, the people who have stability issues are those that try every new app they can get their hands on (myself included). Even still, I am still on my first Kyo after about 2.5 years. It doesn't do some of the things newer models do (like bluetooth, or palm OS 5, and isn't designed for one handed operation) but what it does it does well. Just remember that it is not just a palm so a program that will run fine on a Zire may not be so fine on a Kyo.
Be sure to get a VFS Backup program (lots out there), an SD card, and a good file management utility (try Filez, its free) and you'll be fine.
One more positive that isn't mentioned that much: The Kyo is a tough little unit! Solid materials and construction. I've dropped mine 2-3 times with nothing but a little exterior scratching to show for it. Definitely a plus over some of its competition (like the Treo)
better battery life and faster processing speeds as the phone is not always seaching for a signal to obtain the time and not using as much processor to get it.
By now the 7135 is far from cutting edge technology, but is still the best Palm based clamshell pda phone available... Treo 650 users may give you a different story about the best overall Palm based PDA phone. Just remember by posting in this forum you are getting responses from the 7135 choir. After two years, I like my 7135 with the occasional hard crash and all.
After a while, you will learn to both make regular back-ups on a SD card and to love this phone's little idiosyncrasies like the rest of us. For Verizon Wireless customers the 650 is not an option. This is the best there is.

...Keep in mind that there is only one other Palm based clamshell PDA phone, the Samsung SPH-I500, but it has no SD card slot, which is certainly a deal killer for many, and no speakerphone, which I find really useful. And amazingly, there are NO Pocket PC flip-phones.
Agreed. The SD slot and decent speakerphone are big plusses. The flip design for many is just as important as it protects our screen. You can find Treo 600's on ebay with cracked screens everyday. The 7135 is a solid unit and can take some abuse. Although not he cutting edge, its capabilities still rival some of the newest out there and its physical design is unmatched because it is the only flip palm out ther. (The i500 is a no go without sd card).
Another advantage is that it can still make a phone call on an analog signal. Many of the newer phones are digital only.
I have had two 7135's over the past 28 months. They have been reliable and convenient to learn and use.
Address book has been my most useful program and with chargers at all my stops battery life is rarely an issue. I played with a treo 600 on Saturday at a Verizon stand in circuit city. It took a couple minutes (5) to locate the address book. It seemed as though pressing the hard address book button produces handango. ...even after resetting the buttons. The Treo looks like a poor phone, and that is a shame. Verizon's prices for service are shame too.
I do not use a data plan very often so I guess I pay for the contacts manager, and calendar.
I would use Treo in a minute if this thing breaks and I will go with sprint too, (just to learn how inept they are).
this board and myself know more than the Sprint Verizon dweebs about all these devices.
All things considered we have barely seen any solid advancements in Palm Smartphones over the past 28 months, and the next 12 look as lame. What's New?!http://pdaphonehome.com/forums/newre...hreadid=44407# http://pdaphonehome.com/forums/newre...hreadid=44407#
