I've had the FA on a number of occasions. Usually just a soft reset (which is the only thing you can do when you get the message) will clear the problem. But most recently I got the FA with the Call History phone app. No number of soft resets would change the problem - every time I tried to view my Call History, boom, FA. The only recourse was to use File Manager to delete the Call History data base, then everything was fine again. (Of course I lost my call history, no big deal for me.) Apparently, at least in this case, the .pdb file got corrupted in such a way that it cause the Fatal Alert. So if the problem happens with a particular application, try deleting the associated data file(s) (or re-syncing from the last 'good' version from your backups).
fatal alert means that theres a piece of corrupted software or a corrupted application on the phone. Delete the app if its always causing a problem and hard reset the phone. Try not to use 3rd party apps with the 7135 as not many seem to work for long.

First, the reset you want to do is a soft reset, not hard. A hard reset will erase everything on the device.

Second, that's a very broad statement to put in a public forum like this. I've been using many third party applications on my 7135 for almost two years, and I've had very few problems. Some applications simply don't like the 7135's converged hardware or may conflict with other apps you already have installed. There's no reason not to run third party apps in my opinion. That's one of the device's main functions!
Speaking of Fatal Alerts...I've been experiencing WAY TOO MANY of them lately. I've got some suspicions as to what may be the source of the problem, but I wanted some objective feedback.
I've been a 7135 owner for almost two years now. I have a 7135 on VZW. I started out with the older software, and due to many problems, VZW exchanged the phone for one with the 44/29 software. The phone has been almost PERFECT ever since, except for the last three weeks. I've been experiencing an unusual flurry of FAs causing both soft and hard resets. I've added no new software onto the PDA, and have about 6MB of space left. All of this isn't really important, since I realized this afternoon, that the phone will still throw a Fatal Alert after a clean recovery from a hard crash.
The problem began one evening while I was playing Tetris and the game would get to a certain point, and throw a Fatal Alert reset. Its only gotten worse since then throwing Fatal Alerts while I'm talking on the phone, or simply pressing buttons to access Recent Calls. The only thing that I can remember doing was a *228 to update my PRL. My current PRL is 50261, but even that is one version ahead of when the problems began because I did one last week when I began to suspect the PRL. My suspicion is that VZW is trying to get rid of these devices by sending a bad PRL. Think about it...the only 'variable' after a hard reset is the PRL. Humor me here while I provide some more details to back this up.....
I've got another two other 7135s in the office doing the exact same thing after a PRL update. Another user did a PRL update yesterday, and we're awaiting the crash sequence!! Doesn't seem like it happens immediately, but soon after, and worsens the longer it gets.
I have another 7135 in the office that has been sitting around for a month or so now. The software is the same version 44/29, but the PRL is 50203. I've loaded on this phone all of my data and programs via a hot sync. I've been playing with the phone all morning, and have not had any crashes whatsoever. The person that had this phone last had no problems with the device either. I called VZW customer support to do an ESN change on my account (and I promptly lost MOU by the way!!) and did a *228 to program the phone. So far so good, but I'm willing to bet it won't last long.
Ok, so now I've got the replacement 7135 that was working fine all morning. I call and get it activated on my number, and TWO phone calls later....it dies. Black screen - no Fatal Alert - just had to reset to get it to come back on. Wonder how long this phone will actually work??? Thats makes a total of four phones in the last two weeks that have begun to crash after being stable for the last year.
Sorry, if this sounds strange...but its worth mentioning. Go ahead...try it for yourself. Do a *228 update and see if your phone dies.
i think if verizon was trying to get rid of this model, they would simply offer 7135-owners a great deal on treos or something..
I mean that s probably against the law to send corrupted PRL, I don t think that a company like Verizon would do that. it would be a big risk...
or maybe do they know that 7135-owners careless about treos?
Well, it didn't take long. The new phone crashed after the second phone call. I was too busy this weekend to play with the phone more often. Or I'm sure I'd have more to report.
I do think that a company like Verizon would do something like that. In fact, I remember several years ago when they did exactly that. They changed their pricing structure and introduced 'Americas Choice' and tri-band service. We had 40 phones that were on SingleRate National and many of the users began to complain of poor call quality, coverage and connectivity.
When I spoke to our VZW rep about the problems, her suggestion was to get everyone a new tri-band phone. So, for $90 each, I began upgrading all the phones, and suprisingly enough all the problems went away. So, yes I believe they can and do behave this way.
This phone model has a lot of problems. Check out how many threads there are where users have talked of receiving two...three....four replacements or more. If they could do something to minimize the losses, I bet they would do it.
Someone also mentioned looking at the issue of a 'common' app in these four phones. Yes, many of them have common apps, but they've been on the phone for more than a year now. And, as I mentioned, the phone was crashing without any third party software straight from a clean hard reset. It seems like the phone side of the 7135 is experiencing the problems more so than the PDA side. I will get fatal alerts while I'm in the middle of a phone call, accessing Recent Calls list, or receiving a call while talking to another caller. The five buttons across the top of the phone have caused a majority of the crashes (calendar, phonebook, OK, messages, and web buttons).
I'll have to just continue making notes of the crashes and see if any patterns develop. I just wanted to find out if anyone else out there was experiencing the same symptoms after a PRL update since we have 4 phones with the same problems.
