I receive about 600 threads when I try a search with 'soft reset' or 'hard reset'... sorry to post a question that was surely answered in the past..
I m following MGuzzy's advices on 'Setting up and Optimizing the 7135' (thanks, BTW) and one of the advice is: 'do regular soft resets'.
just so I can get familiar with my new machine (which by the way seems to work great! ), could someone post how to do a "soft reset", "warm reset", and "hard reset" exactly?
also, can the 'protected softwares' (pre-installed on the phone) be deleted for the memory?
for example, if I install Bebopper, can I delete the old mp3 player?
thanks a bunch, once again... I think that s about it for now.
You do a soft reset by removing the battery cover (not the battery) and pushing the stylus into the reset hole. You will see the word "reset" at the top of the battery compartment and there is a recessed hole to the right.
A hard reset deletes everything on your phone, and I never do that on purpose. I think a soft reset is sufficient. My phone has had two fatal crashes, which wiped out my settings, and I used Backup Buddy VFS to restore it both times. Since I never do the hard reset, I don't know how I will let someone else on the forum answer that one for you!
To remove "locked" files you have to purchase a third party program such as FileZ.
Alternately, you can load programs onto the SD card and run them from there.
To perform a soft reset:
1. Turn the Kyo over. Open the battery door on the back of the phone.
2. Press the reset button with the stylus. (Upper right hand corner)
3. Replace the battery door. Turn the phone back over and verif that it has restarted.
To perform a hard reset:
1. With the flip open, turn the Kyo over. Open the battery door on the back of the phone.
2.Press and hold down the backlight button on the keyboard of the phone. Keep holding down the backlight button as you use the stylus to press the reset pin on the right side of the battery. Wait a moment and release only the reset pin.
3. Weh the Palm logo appears, release the backlight key. The following message appears
Erase all data?
Yes - "up" button
No - any other button
4. Press the up/down toggle to complete the hard reset and delete your data. Press any other key to cancel the hard reset and keep your data.
Some people have gone so far as to load a program called Chrony that allows you to schedule certain events and programs; to schedule an app called paperclip that launches a soft reset.
to reiterate Osteo's post, The preinstalled apps are stored in ROM that's why they are always there even after a hard reset that wipes all the other data. So, yes, you would need a program like JackSprat/JackFlash to add/remove programs from the ROM. Keep in mind messing with the ROM is not for the faint of heart. I find that I'm not enough of a "power user" to need that space and warrant messing with the ROM.

I have my phone loaded down with launchers, applications, hacks, and more, and I never have to soft reset. Right now, it's been "on" at least 2 weeks since my last soft reset.
thanks for the help amigos.
first, I will NOT temper with ROM files (at least for now).
Second, I love my phone already! (although I still can t hotsync using that USD cable , I ll keep messing around with settings I guess)
Sometimes my cradle doesn't sync thru the USB or says port busy when I try to sync by hitting the button on the cradle, but if I go to the System folder on the 7135 and go into Hotsync and actually hit the hotsync logo it will sync. Should be set to "local and cradle/cable" on the Hotsync screen. Don't know if this helps you or not, just throwing the idea out there.
Yeah that's a known bug... No one has been able to explain what the cause is, though. I think it is a driver conflict with the USB ports or a USB device. I don't think it happens when plugged in via the serial plug.

I sometimes have problems with Hotsync. I am not sure it is the same problem. Usually it's after I've aborted a previous Hotsync. I get the error message on the 7135 that it can't connect to the PC. The solution that always works for me is to soft reset the Palm and reboot the computer (win xp).
