There is an capability of this phone that I don't see documented anywhere in the literature. The phone has settings to handle two different providers. I use Verizon in the USA. I was always switching to my GSM phone in Indonesia until I got brave and let the Indonesian CDMA carrier Mobile-8 program my phone for the second setting. Now when I go to Indonesia I just go to phone settings, switch the service to the other number and in seconds my phone is working on the the Mobile-8 network in Indonesia.
The cost of a phone number in Indonesia is a flat $1.50 and you can buy as much prepaid time as you like. Forget Tri-bands, the roaming costs will eat you alive. If you own this phone then this is the way to go.
BTW - Mobile-8 has telephone stores just like Verizon or Sprint. They usually have one central store where their good technicians are located who can program a 7135. Beware, there are very few people who speak English so you may want to take someone with you that can translate what you want to do.

How do I check if I have the second NAM capabilty -- where in the menus is it?

Could it work on SPRINT PCS?
Phone Prefs -> Phone Service -> Phone Line
If you have more than one option on the drop down then you have it. You would have to go into the programming mode and program the second NAM. And if you have a sprint account it should be able to work for that (not sure how Sprint activates ESNs or if they activate non Sprint phone ESNs). Everything including the PRLs should be independent.
Originally posted by kdean I took my phone to China in September. Worked like a charm; made and received calls on my normal number with no difficulty at all.
Did you mean you were roaming to another CDMA provider or that you set your second NAM setting to another carrier without a problem?
Originally posted by ohvhost so if I have a second line listed (000) 000-0042, then I could possibly have that programmed to another number?
if I do, is that number used for inbound, outbound or both? Could I recieve calls to the second number when cofigured for the first?
Yes, you could have that programmed to another provider. American carriers may have policies against doing it, but that is standard practice for most foreign carriers.
Both lines cannot be active on your phone simultaneously, however, it is a very easy to switch from one line to the other once they are programmed in the phone. The line that is active will be used for all inbound, outbound, sms, etc. However, once you switch back to the other line, any stored voice mails or msgs, etc, will be there.
If we do not see the second drop-down is there somethign we cna do to get it? I have only the one option for my current provider but often travel to SE Asia/China.
it is quite possible your nam2 has been disabled by your service provider...get them to look at it with there pst machine and fix that parimeter if that were the case

Moonie thanks. But do you mean I should go to a Verizon store for this? And what is a pst machine? I am planning to join the Indonesia relief effort in a week and was wondering if my beloved 7135 would work in Aceh Province. Also would anyone know how to check for mobile-8 coverage area in that part of Indonesia. I searched fairly extensively but could not find anything. Thanks.

KWPST is the Kyocera service programming application. It runs on a PC and can be used to program the phone, download firmware images, etc. Yes, it does have the capability to enable the NAM2 capabilities/programming area. Somewhere there is a flag to "enable/disable" the NAM2 capability. Somewhere else is where you program values for NAM2. Once its enabled you can program the values for NAM2 on the phone.
Who is your service provider? VZW did have a PRI that had NAM2 enabled. If you don't have that they can do it with the KWPST. Assuming you have VZW I would call the data support people, explain that you are headed over to do relief work and will need NAM2 to get service once you get there. Possibly somebody could walk the guy in the store through the steps. VZW has been getting away from servicing 7135s in the stores and the data services people handle the support and often simply do a swap for problems. You may have a hard time finding someone to program it in a week.
Thanks for the information. I will look into this.
Quick,
Hopefully you will be flying through Jakarta. The address of the Mobile-8 Office you want to go to is:
Mobile-8 KEBON SIRIH
Jl. Kebon Sirih Kav. 25, Jakarta Pusat
Aceh is a very remote area for Indonesia and due to the fact that prior to the tsunami there was a lot of problems between the Government and the locals there has not been much development take place there. I looked at Mobile-8's coverage and it doesn't appear they have extended to Sumatra at this point I think you will be fortunate to have any cell phone coverage at all after the tsunami.
Thanks for the address but I will probably be going direct to Medan. Wonder if Medan office exists. Where are you looking at mobile-9 coverage map and info?
On another topic I need to take a sat phone as well. I know nothing about sat phones. Any chance peopole here could recommend something? am especially interested in data capabiliites as the people sending me would like email updates and even some photos if possible. Thanks for anything.

I believe that Iridium is active over Indonesia. I know they make a phone (I believe it is the 9505) that can be used as a modem for a laptop at 2400 bps (yes that must be very slow and at a $2.00 a minute you want to compress those files first). I know there is software that needs installed on your PC to use it as a modem.
I would make arrangements with an American company for the phone and take it with me as the only people in Indonesia who will be using a satellite phone are from outside the country.
Roadpost (www.roadpost.com) has rentals which would be good if you are only going for a month or two. If you are staying for a year then you may want to buy one.
