I should have seen it coming from earlier posts on this group that said no
new smartphones (mine is a Kyocers 7135) were being given web (not WAP)
access without a concurrent data plan. I'm not a true internet junkie and my data use always fit within my plan minutes. However, just a couple of days ago my 1x data access stopped working and everytime I tried to use my web browser (Xino), I kept getting an error message (no DNS entry found).
I called customer service who informed me that a change in the system (she
said effective November 18, 2004) has eliminated the ability to use my
regular plan minutes for internet access. She transfered me to billing,
where (over a barrel) I signed up for the $49.99 unlimited data plan, in
addition to my Mobile Web W/100 Alerts.
The odd thing is I got my current phone in April (NIB off E-Bay) and there was no problem then on the part of customer service activating the phone and helping me with my IP settings with only mobile web as part of my billing profile.
Has anyone else had a similar experience? I also found out the latest PRL switched my local tower to extended roaming through Sprint (not a problem since I have an old Singlerate West 400 plan without roaming charges).
Heresy to say this uin this forum, but maybe I should check out Sprint and get one of the deals on the Treo 650
that Verizon doesn't offer.
FWIW, I have not had this experience. I am using regular plan minutes, not signed up for any kind of mobile web, and everything (web and e-mail work fine).
I activated my phone last month… When I called the rep, he said that
I HAD to get a data plan. Here was the exchange with the rep. (Only the good parts)
Rep: Yep because it’s a smart phone you HAVE to get a data
Plan. Stating that the system would not let him move forward
In activating the phone until I selected a data plan.
Me: That’s odd with my 6035 Smartphone I did not have to
HAVE one.
Rep: Well because it’s a smart phone it’s always trying to access
The web.
Me: (having fun now) Wow even when I’m sleeping it’s web surfing?
Rep: well no
Me: Can I speak to a supervisor?
Rep: I have to call you back …
Me: OK (I did not think he would, but ok)
Rep: (calls back) Walks through activating the phone without a data plan and without mentioning
about how the phone will surf the web with out me.
And yes the phone has standard access to the web with the #777 option. Ya it's only 14.4 but it's find for what I do.

I had a web problem that required a call to Cust. Svce. They told me I had to have a data plan. I argued with them for about 4 days when I finally got someone who knew what the problem was and told me that a data plan is not required but most of the Cust Svce Reps think it is. To make a long story short , he got me back on the web without a data plan.
savvygirl - you don't even need mobileweb unless you plan to use the wap browser and access VZW interface.
The reason VZW is pushing a data plan is due to the Treo 600 which, unlike the 7135, tends to stay on and rack up minutes even when dormant. They have a flawed implementation of the Treo 600 so they are avoiding calls for refunds for $1000 invoices.
Lostinthe530: the more I think about your situation, the more it upsets me. I would suggest going to a local store, asking for a manager, asking the manager if a mobile web plan is REQUIRED for the 7135, and when s/he says "No." Tell him/her what you told us and make them make it right.
I think you would be better doing this in person, so they have to look you in the eye (IMHO).

I suppose at somepoint they will figure out a way to force everybody into a data plan of some sort. But for now, as of the last time I checked, I was still able to get on line with EN or NA or whatever they are calling it now from my regular minutes. If I have a need to call VZW tech or Cust service I'm careful that they don't look to closely at my plan cause I don't want them to change my MOU access. I even called up once and complained about getting junk SMS messages and they gave 100 messages/ mo. for no additional charge, don't want to lose that one either. But for the newly 7135 converged you don't need a data plan to activate the phone so don't let them sell you one. You can always use the QNC (14.4) service to get online if your not getting the higher speed 1X service.

I appreciate all your feedback...I am going into the local Verizon store tomorrow to try and straighten this out. It appeared I had truly been cut off from 1xRTT access. I had picked up my 7135 from other than Verizon precisely to avoid having to change my plan. For my useage, circuit switched data would serve my purpose.
On my 7135, I don't have a Details button on the Network screen. Just a Connect button. I went back and looked at my old 6035 and the Netork Screen there has Details and Connect.
Is there something else somewhere that has to be turned on for the Details button to appear?
Here in the MidWest Verizon doesn't try that crap. Phone works without a data plan and calling customer service with an inquiry about adding a data plan did not bring "Sir, you MUST have a data plan".
Sounds like some people are getting idiots... question is, are the idiots forcing the data plan or the ones who aren't...?
I had one honest sales person tell me back in 1999 that they did not get any commission on re-ups, only on new sign-up's or adds.
(tidbit of history Verizon was Bell Alantic Mobile back then. and BTW http://www.bam.com still works. For those of us like me that look for the shortest way to get there.)

You have to make a copy of the network connection before you can edit the script. Use the "Duplicate" function from the pull-down menu. Then, select the copy. When you do, the "Details" button will show up on the screen. After you edit the details stuff, just leave the copy selected as your network connection.
Is there anything new on this topic? I was able to use internet with my 7135 as just minutes in my plan for the past year until just last month. That's when they added the data pay per kilobite without my knowledge. When I called to complain, they did refund my last month's data, but said I had to have some sort of data. Is this a new trick, or can I still try to call and get the data taken off if I get the right person? Help!?!
I asked them this question by e-mail (so the response would be in writing) and here is what they told me.
Me:
My phone is a Kyocera 7135 that I have always connected to the internet using Verizon Quick Connect (#777) and my data minutes have come out of my plan allowance minutes. I now see I have something on my plan called EVDO Pay-As-You-Go. I have been told by Verizon Wireless Customer Support that this means that I still have my data minutes come out of my plan allowance minutes, but I want to make sure.
Here is my question: Is my account still configured so that my data minutes come out of my plan allowance minutes? It is essential to me that it is. Thanks.
Their response:
Thank you for contacting the Verizon Wireless website. As part of our Worry Free Guarantee, your concern becomes our concern the first time you contact us. We are happy to assist you with your EVDO question.
The Kyocera 7135 provides the option of connecting to the internet via a Quick 2 Net or Express Network connection. If does not, however, provide our customers with EVDO access.
BroadbandAccess (formerly EVDO) technology, offers a leading-edge wireless, high-speed, broadband Internet Access service. Broadband Access is the fastest, fully mobile, wireless data experience available today. The Download Burst is up to 2 Mbps with typical speeds of 300-500 kbps. The Upload is Up to 144 kbps (w/ average of 40-60 kbps)
Speed comparison to landline: NationalAccess is similar to landline dial-up
BroadbandAccess: is similar to DSL, cable modem & T1 (download only)
You are currently using the Quick 2 Net connection which is at a speed of 14.4 kbps. This connection allows you to use your price plan minutes. We also have the Express Network (national Access) connection which is at a speed of 40-60 kbps. The National Access connection does require a Monthly Price Plan Feature in order to be used on your Kyocera 7135. This is due to the significant speed increase.
Unfortunately, EVDO is not available for your Kyocera 7135 handset. This is also true if you are using your Kyocera as a wireless modem to connect to your laptop.
With Verizon Wireless you can add an Express Network/NationalAccess feature to your account ranging from $39.99 per month for 20 MB of usage to $79 for unlimited usage on your Kyocera 7135. To find the pricing options for the Verizon Wireless Express Network/NationalAccess service, please visit the <URL: www.verizonwireless.com > website and select the "Mobile Option" link, then select the "Wireless Internet" and "NationalAccess" links. This will bring you to the Verizon Wireless Express Network/NationalAccess area.
If you have further questions or concerns, please write to us again through www.VerizonWireless.com. We appreciate your business and thank you for choosing Verizon Wireless.
So are you still able to connect with Quick 2 net for minutes from your plan and not have any data plan? At the bottom it only mentions plans for EN that you pay for and that EVDO is not available for the 7135. Please let me know before I e-mail them.
