7135 as Modem on Mac PB - Connects, but no data flows
Hi, everyone!
First, let me say this is one fabulous forum! After upgrading to a 7135 (from a 6035), I can't tell you how many times I've found the answers to questions in this forum. Thanks to everyone who's helped, even though you never knew you had.
My problem has got to be a simple setting but I'll be darned if I can figure out what or where it is. I recently bought a Powerbook G4 and wanted to use the 7135 as a modem to connect when I'm away from home (and unwilling to pay some hotel's rather exorbitant connection fees).
Here's what I've done so far:
I downloaded the 1xRTT modem script from Paul Lucas' webpage and installed it.
I've entered my username, the verizon password and #777 as the phone number.
I connected the 7135 to the G4 via USB using the cradle and launched Fax/Modem.
The computer dials, connects and I get a connected status window - everything looks good so far.
The problem is that when I launch Safari or Mail, neither application will "see" the connection - Mail's a bit clueless and will just ding, indicating that I have no mail (when I know full well I do), and Safari can't find any servers.
I thought that it might be a script issue, so I found posts here in the forum (thanks, LVC!) about using scripts. I pasted these into new TextEdit documents, but when I go to the Network Pane and navigate to the Terminal Scripts option, it's grayed out and won't let me select a script.
So...can anyone tell me where I made a wrong term...er, turn?
Thanks in advance!

Do you have the portable keyboard for the 7135 that plugs into its hotsync port? If so, you have to disable its keyboard driver on the 7135 before using the FAXModem program to use it as a modem for a computer.
The 7135 cradle doesn't work on Macs as a wireless modem because its True USB. You'll need to get a USB cable.
Once you connect the cable, try using the Kyocera modem drivers instead of Paul Lucas's. You can find them at : http://www.kyocera-wireless.com/supp...em_Drivers.sit
Sorry, Genji...SilvrDrgn's got the solution. All I needed to do was launch "Keyboard" and uncheck the "Enable Keyboard" box.
Thanks, SilvrDrgn!!
Genji, Thanks for responding. I was crossing my fingers that USB was USB, and Apple of all companys would do their best to adhere to any standard that they didn't create.
Thanks to everyone who responded...I am now happily checking my e-mail and skimming my daily round of webpages.

How fast is this connection supposed to be? I'm impressed...
I followed all the directions using my usb cradle that comes with the phone (I didn't buy a separate data cable). I used the existing Kyocera 1XRTT file that was already in my modem scripts folder. I followed the directions on Paul Lucas's website - no joy. Found the problem was simply that where he says username "your-wireless-number@vzw3g.com" he really means "yourwirelessnumber@vzw3g.com" (10 digits, no dashes; the first time I had the dashes inserted.) This thing rocks! The Mac's Wireless Connect reported speed is 115200 bps. It's clearly faster than 56kbps land-line dialup, so the figure seems about right.
I'm writing this post via my 7135 as a wireless modem; I've had this thing for over 1.5 years and didn't know I could do this! By the way, I really like this phone and wonder why so many people have problems with it. I did get the dreaded "service required" message once when the phone was 1 month out of warranty but VZW replaced it at no cost! How many providers would do that?
(2) If I use this same approach but instead of using yourphonenumber @vzw3g.com, password vzw and number #777, use myispusername@myisp.com, password mypassword and use the regular dialup number for my internet service provider, I can log on to my usual dialup ISP. Internet Connect still shows the same 115200 bps, but the "Fax/Modem" screen on the 7135 shows "Std. Data Rate" instead of "High Data Rate", and the connection speed is obviously much slower. That's what I'm using now for this message.
The advantage of (2) is that (I guess) I'm just using my plan minutes, so that evenings/weekends are free although very slow, whereas I have no idea what I'm going to be charged for the 1xRTT I get by dialing #777 and using my verizon account (since I haven't signed up for a data plan with VZW).

My 1XRTT minutes are ordinary minutes. There is no advantage to using one's own ISP.
That file isn't "mine." If you read the copyright notice, it clearly says, "Copyright 1991-1996 Apple Computer, Inc." and it was modified by David Salerno at Verizon Wireless.

I have since added this information to my web page.

There are other threads on this site that suggest VZW's 1XRTT on plan minutes is going away for some phones. Do you have any insight as to whether this applies to 7135 users also?
By the way, thanks for all your help on this. Anyone who likes Macs and 7135s can't be all bad...

I found that sometimes the connection doesn't work. The "Kyocera Wireless USB Modem" entry in the "NetworkĘPortĘConfigurations" is ghosted out and no combination or permutation of configuration parameters will get it going again, nor will repeated unplugging and re-plugging the USB cable. I found the solution in this case is to soft reset the 7135, then the 'ghost' disappears and everything works fine.
I suspect this is another manifestation of the same issue as the HotSync button on the USB cradle not working sometimes, in which case you have to soft reset (which is what led me to try that to solve the modem issue).
