Wireless Hotsync

I looked around a bit for this, but I didn't see exactly what I was looking for.

I'd like to use my kyo 7135 to access my home pc to initiate a hotsync while on the road. Verizon has a service, but, it requires, basically, that you hotsync you pc to their servers and then you hotsync the phone to verizon. Plus, it costs money.

What I really want is to do a real-time hotsync to my pc at home. I have an always on DSL connection on my pc using an Actiontec GT701 DSL modem.

Is what I want possible? I've asked the folks at MergicVPN if their product will do what I want...still awaiting a reply.

Is anyone doing what I want to do?

Thanks!

Abe

How about using the kyo to initiate a network hotsync?

Anyone have experience with this?

Thanks,

Abe

I had followed the steps outlined here a while ago on my 6035 and it worked. You'll need a static IP - or at least one that doesn't change while you're away.
I haven't tried it yet with my new 7135, but I would imagine it would still work.

I used IP Chicken to get my IP address and the "name address".

I tried daveinfopage (that's exactly what I want to do) as well but couldn't get it to work. Is there anything you did different to get it to work for you? I have a DSL modem as my always on connection and it has a static ip address...but I think it also has a built in firewall...maybe that's the problem.

What's ip chicken and how can I use it for what I need?

Thanks for the info

I was playing around with it a little last night after I posted. I had a hard time getting it through my router. It seemed every time I tried to synch it used a different port. When I bypassed the router this evening it went right through.

I just used IPChicken to get my external IP address and my "node name".

OK...you got it to work on the 7135? I need more details. On the palm side, under hotsync setup, what should I use for primary pc name and primary pc address and where do I get this info?

Thanks!

Abe

These are my settings (with my actual IP address x'd out for obvious reasons):

Primary PC Name:
cpe-66-189-xxx-xxx.ma.charter.com

Primary PC Address:
66.189.xxx.xxx

Subnet Mask(Optional):
255.255.252.0

Yours will differ. You'll need to set Primary PC Name to the Name Address on IP Chicken and fill in the Current IP Address from there as your Primary PC Address (not the 192.168.xxx.xxx address from your router). And also fill in your Subnet Mask for good measure.

You can find your subnet mask by going to Start-Run and typing 'cmd' and clicking OK. Then type 'ipconfig' at the DOS prompt and hit Enter. This will give you your internal IP address if you have a router - should begin with 192.168.xxx.xxx. - and will also list your Subnet Mask. There's probably an easier way to get this but I don't know it. Then type 'exit' and hit Enter to get out of this screen.

Note that after you do a HotSync it sets these back to the actual PC's name and internal IP address assigned by the router. So you have to make sure those are set to the right ones before you start each time.

The only way I've gotten this to work so far is to go into my router settings and put my PC in the DMZ (De-Militarized Zone) which means it is NOT protected by the NAT firewall in your router. Highly NOT recommended. I only did it briefly so I didn't have to totally disconnect all the wires on my network to hook my PC directly to my cable modem.

Like I had mentioned previously I tried to set up port forwarding but it seemed to use a different port each time I tried to HotSync.

I found what port it was using by going to my router's log.

For Connection Setup Dave had used a connection he had created (dTP) because he had a standalone modem connected to a regular Palm device. On the 7135 just use the Wirelss Modem selection.

Under the HotSynch icon on the 7135 set your Network Preferences to either "Express Network (1XRTT)" or "VZW Quick 2 Net (14.4 kpbs)." And under that the phone number is set to #777.

One stupid thing I forgot to do a couple times is to make sure the HotSycnh program is up and running on your computer when you try this. Duh!

Hope this helps.

Thanks! That looks like good info. I'm away for 4 days (why I want remote hotsync) so, I'll give this stuff a try when I get home.

I've done this..

look for my posts of OTA hotsync here
forum post

Biggest difficulty, my phone, after EACH hotsync, network or local, immediately changes the IP to my behind router 192.168.254.X IP, and I have to repaste in my real IP each time I want to do an OTA hotsync

Thumbs up Use RAS

I Have successfully setup a Network Hotsync to my home and work computer by using a dialup network RAS system both on my work and home computers just have your phone dial into your modem at home or work authenticate using RAS networking follow the instructions on the Network Hotsync help for configuring your network modem hotsync on the phone and desktop configuration and your ready.

The problem Im having is my work uses Groupwise and a third party conduit called Intelliesync to attach to Groupwise through hotsync to my mail on my Kyocera 7135
After one successful sync hot sync locks up and shuts down? Then I need to remote into the system to restart hotsync what pain remember in order to do this your system needs to be logged on but can be window locked for security. OS MS XP and 2K Pro with current SP’s installed.

Good luck.
Thumbs up

This may be a dumb question but why do people want to do a hot synch from the road to a home computer?

why to hotsynch from the road?

I do it mostly to get my email-with all my email filters in place- from my home computer, I.e. I only get the email I want to recieve-

I know that if I MUST do a hard reset on the road, I'll get my data back

Um, just because I can. Just for the sheer geek factor involved. "Can your cell phone do this?"

Plus like kredai had said, if you're away from home and your phone crashes and requires a hard reset your up the proverbial creek.
