I've had a ongoing problem for the past few weeks. Within the past week it has gotten much worse.
Occasionally, when I hang up the phone (by closing the device) the whole thing crashes out on me. This requires a soft reset. So far, I have lost no information. Basically, what happens is the top display displays nothing and when flipped open, the screen does not turn on. The back light button does not do anything and it appears the device is off. I cannot receive incoming calls when the phone is in this state.
The problem seems to not occur when I hang the call up first (by pushing end) and then close the phone. However, I have only done this a handful of times and no crashes so far. This problem used to occur one or two times a week a month ago, but last week happened on a few times a day (about 25-50% of the time). The most distressing part is most of the time, I don't even realize the phone has crashed until sometime later, when I try to make a call.
I'm not using any hacks and the only apps I've installed on my phone are very reputable (AvantGo and a few web clippings mostly).
One important note -- one time this happened and I was at my desk, so I happened to plug in the phone in for whatever reason. At this point, the phone and Palm lit back up and all was well. When I unplugged, everything was normal.
I appologize if this has already been discussed, I searched around a bit, and didn't see anything.
Back up your data/apps and hard reset. Try using the phone "clean" and see if it still happens. That way you can pinpoint if it is an app or the phone.
P.S. Although AvantGo is reputable, it is not stable for everyone on the 7135.
This happened on my phone exactally as you described. Worked fine for months, then it happened every once in awhile, then it happened very often (unless I was trying to make it happen, of course). Finally, I hard reset and just reinstalled everything. Been fine since.
Just a guess, but I think it was a battery DA I installed, maybe telling my phone the battery was dead??? Either way, though, I reinstalled it with everything else, and everythings fine, now.
***note: I mean I reinstalled fresh. I didn't use BackUp Buddy. I reinstalled everything except Palm Desktop, my address db, and datebook db.
When I had the same thing happen to me a while back, the problem turned out to be that I had a phone number in my Address Book entered incorrectly, namely, there was a letter "O" where ther was supposed to be the number "0". As soon as I corrected the problem, it stopped happening...
I have had this exact problem very recently. I hate to do the hard reset and reinstall thing and was putting it off as long as possible. I haven't used any hacks for months so that wasn't it. I did have energysaver on my phone but haven't used it for a long time. I went through Filez and deleted a few things, in addition to EnergySaver....I have not had a crash ever since.
My experience after using this phone for over a year now is that almost everything is a software problem that looks like a hardware problem.
I also have had the same problem. I think that I have narrowed down the problem to a battery. I have 3 batteries and try to rotate them once a month to keep them all fresh and charged. I am not sure what is happening, but it seems when I use one certain battery, is when I have this problem. At first I thought it was how hard I closed the clamshell or the fact that it was hot or some other situations, but with other batteries, it doesn't happen. This battery will power the phone for a day sometimes, so it isn't like the battery has an obvious short or an open circuit or looses power quickly, I don't really understand it, but I have not had the problem with the other two batteries.
I am experiencing the exact issue described by ffegie. I am using 3 hacks, Takephone Plus, Speaker phone, and Teal echo. The last thing I was doing was goofing around with 1 button launchers (various different ones, eg HBX, 1 Button, Palm Commander, and Aardquick.) The problem happened after this. I truly agree that most issues are software as my phone was very robust untill I tried to "Tweak" it with various configurations.
I will try the Hard Reset and reinstall. Any tips on the safest way to do this? Do I rename the Backup folder? or is there a better way?
Interesting....I run Takephone as well and one of the things I deleted was a Launcher. I wonder if those two programs were fighting.
I agree that it sounds like a hardware problem (since it often happens when closing the phone) but since I fixed it without replacing the phone, the battery or a hard reset, I find this unlikely.
I would try removing any launchers and energysaver if you are running that and see what happens if you are wary of doing the hard reset.
By the way, while I was having these problems, I did experience 2 unplanned hard resets...thanks to Backup buddy I recovered nicely.
I got the same problems as several described. Is this wide spread?
Sounds like various solutions can fix it, but none is a "sure fix"
I tried them all and none fixed my phone...
I wonder if this is a known issue with the 7135?
Any ideas how to get an offical fix from Kyocera?
Seems odd that several of us would have this exact same issue at about the same time. Is there anything common any of us have done? Recently I have had the following events occur before my problems started:
1. Loaded Slowlauncher then deleted.
Loaded Hard Button Extender then deleted it.
Loaded Aardquick launcher then deleted it.
Loaded Palm Commander Launcher then deleted it.
Loaded 1 Button Launcher then deleted it.
Loaded Single Button Launcer then deleted it.
(I know I like to fiddle)
2. I have always had the following hacks on my phone with no issues: Teal echo, Speaker Phone, Take Phone Plus
3. I always used an old version of TealMaster. Decided to try out the new version. It seemed unstable so went back to old version.
4. From this forum I downloaded a MMCLIB Hack that should allow for playing of MP3's > 128 kbs. Found it may have been affecting other systems so I deleted it and tried to revert to old version.
5. I have always had Energy Saver on my phone. But just before I had these issues the program was triggered during a stint in a rural area. (I never had it save me before)
6. I also run the contrast fix program. But I have always run this and nothing new happened with it.
7. I am running TealLock as my security program.
8. I recently downloaded the new version of Teal Movie over top my old version.
9. I recently downloaded a program from Palm Gear and they put their synch program on my phone. I deleted it. I believe it is Installigent and Palmgear.
I know this is a long list. But all of these were done in just a few days preceding my crash problems. If any of these seem common to anyone please let us know.
Same problem started in the last 10 days. I have not added or deleted any new software in weeks. I'll close the flip after a call and when I reopen, blank screen. Not often, but enough for me to check after every call.
I just got off the phone with Kyocera tech support. Their angle is to wipe all of the programs clear and if there are no problems in a few days, to start adding programs one by one a few days at a time and see what may be causing the problem. If the problem exists before the programs are loaded, then they want the phone back for a repair.
Anyway, I will be without many of my programs for a few days. I think that we need to keep this dialog going until a solution is found.
By the way, the battery thing I had mentioned in an earlier note, well, my battery that I said had not given me a problem gave me a problem Saturday. The phone did a hard reset and I had to do a hotsync to get my programs back. The main thing that I needed was the address book, but thank goodness I had my laptop with me.
I think that I will start putting my address book data on an SD card and from time to time copy the data to the card so I can get it back in an emergency. I don't keep the laptop with me all the time.
Re: SD card. You may want to try something like Backup Buddy VFS. I set mine up to backup every night at 3 am. I have used it like a "System Restore" before if I do something beyond repair I have just Hard Reset and then restored from the card.
But with respect to the crashes I am pretty sure I have narrowed it down to a freeware program called Single Button Launcher. The reason why is I contacted support about another app called Palm Commander Launcher. The problem with it was it wasn't remembering the button I assigned to it after shutting off. They said this is only an issue with 7135 as "The smart phone resets the phone related buttons by itself". I ran the phone without any launchers for a while with no probs. Added back the Single button Launcher and bingo crashes. I wonder if the Takephone hack or Datebook assignment to the hardware buttons are conflicting with these launchers? .... Not an expert, but at least the problem is resolved for now.
I don't have Single button Launcher or anything close. I may try backup buddy. I did not realize that you could schedule the backups. To do it at 3 AM sounds like a neat trick.
I just went to the PalmOne site and downloaded a 30 day trial of Backup Buddy VFS. It looks like it is just what I needed. I also set mine up to backup at 3:00 am. For $16.00, I am sure I will be purchasing it pretty soon. Anyway, the trial version sure looks good. Again, thanks for the info.
I am also noticing fewer problems since I stopped using reassignments of the hard buttons. I do not use Single Button Launcher but I did have the buttons assigned for TakePhone, Memos, Blazer, etc. Things seem better since I stopped that.....but it is not perfect and I notice that frequently, I will open the flip and the phone is set to the PDA Prefs page which means it crashed and reset itself. That is a lot better than the blank screen of death but it is still pissing me off!
