SMTP error 535 (malformed input) with Eudora on PC

This is an issue using Eudora on the PC (with the 7135 as a modem), not Palm Eudora.

When I try to send mail, I used to be able to use my own domain's SMTP server with no problem. But recently I've been getting a "535 malformed input" error in Eudora (and a similar error if I try Outlook). The error used to pop up only occasionally, but now it happens all the time.

It seems the smtp.vzwmail.net server doesn't work either (I get a relaying error)...though I thought that was only for the Palm Eudora.

I'm not even sure whether the error is with my hosting provider or with the Verizon service. Any suggestions? I've tried all the search options on this forum that I could find.

Thanks,
Seth

Thanks, but...

I have a login and password from Verizon. They don't work when I send from my PC using the 7135 as a modem. That's when the relaying error appears.

Which SMTP server should I be using? I thought smtp.vzwmail.net was only for sending from the phone itself, and I should still use mail.mydomain.com (or whatever) when the phone is connected to the PC as a modem. That's what used to work, anyway.

What do other people use?

Thanks,
Seth

well it all depends on which dialup service you conenct to. if you connect to verizon quick2net or expressnet, you need to use their smtp server. if you dial up to another isp like earthlink, aol, or juno, or smoething, you obviously need to use your regular smtp server.

try to telnet to the smtp server on port 25 and see if you can connect. if i understand correctly, you cant even connect if you are within the verizon network.

which mail client are you using on the pc? double check that it is in fact setup properly to provide hte user/pass to the smtp server (in outlook its "my outgoing server (smtp) requires authentication")
it also might be referred to as ESMTP

Was there any resolution to this problem???
I have the same issue - I can use the eudora e-mail fine on my phone using smtp.vzwmail.net for the outgoing mail server and my verizon supplied username (###@vtext.com) and password, however, when I try to use Outlook Express from my laptop, I get an outgoing mail error (pop3 incoming works fine). I've tried the authentication as well with no luck. any other ideas?
Thanks,
Russ

I had to upgrade my PC Eudora to get it to work. I assume Outlook has analogous fields that will make it function properly:

I set up a "relay personality" in Eudora, simply called "relay," with the following properties:

Return address: [my normal, non-Verizon e-mail address]

Login name: xxxxxxxxxx@vzwmail.net

SMTP server: smtp.vzwmail.net

"Authentication allowed" and "Use relay personality, if defined" both checked

Secure Sockets when Sending: "If available, STARTTLS"

Then, in my normal e-mail account settings, I have...

Return address: [my normal, non-Verizon e-mail address]

Login name: [non-Verizon login]

SMTP server: [non-Verizon SMTP]

"Use relay personality, if defined" is checked - so all the settings for "relay" (including the Verizon SMTP server) get used when I send mail.

Secure Sockets when Sending: Never

Then, under Tools / Options / Sending Mail, "SMTP Relay Personality" is set to "relay."

So I never actually send mail through my own SMTP server - it's always through Verizon's - but I haven't had a problem since. The Verizon SMTP server sometimes won't send an attachment that's over 3MB or so, so I have to go into mail2web.com and send it that way - but in my case that's rare enough that it doesn't bother me.

Cheers,
Seth

Thanks. I also discovered today that the key is the logon name - phone#@vzwmail.net. When I setup my eudora on the pda, they had me use ###@vtext.com. That works for the pda but not OE (???why). Anyway, changing it to vzwmail.net made it work.
