Extremely sluggish 7135 - Has anyone else seen it this bad?

Hey guys.

My brother is on his 3rd Kyo 7135 due to this exact same problem and his current phone is doing it too. He's so sick of it that he's ready to just ditch the 7135 entirely.

The biggest problem is that he can't answer the phone. Its starts to ring, he hits Send, the phone continues to ring, he hits send again getting frustrated, the phone rings some more then the caller gets bumped to voice mail, then all the button pressing suddenly registers and the phone starts calling people (not always the person who just called). He's also having a very hard time dialing, it sometimes takes several minutes to get all 10 digits of a phone number entered because the button presses don't register right away, which causes mistakes to be made, which delays the whole process.

Like I said, he's had the exact same problem on 3 different phones now! I think this is crazy, I've had my original 7135 (purchased from GetConnected.com) since January '03 and it has been rock-solid and reliable. Sure, I occassionaly see some sluggishness, but nothing even close to what is happening to him. He hasn't installed any odd apps, he's not a power Palm user. He's been doing soft resets several times per day and hard resets a couple of times per week but it only helps for an hour or so.

Has anyone else seen anything this bad? He's convinced that I got the only good 7135 ever made. I've got to say that this is worrying me too because I've worn out the headset jack on my 7135 (after having made and tested several hundred adapters and headsets) and I need to replace it, but I worry that I'll get stuck with a dud like he's been stuck with. Since my phone is out of warranty and I'm not eligible for an upgrade with Verizon for almost another year I'm going to have to pay full price again, which I'm not looking forward to.

Any help? Advice?

Later,

Cool Cat

Sounds like something he's loading on it that's causing the problem. There also also viruses for the Palm OS, go figure.

What programs he putting on it and how long after he gets a new one does it start?

Does it continue after wiping it completley? Pulling the battery out will wipe the memory, at least on mine.

These questions and more are where we need to start.

What type of ringer is he playing? And try setting the answer on flip to on so he can open the flip and it answers the phone. A long ringer file will slow it down and make it delay...

A list of programs/hacks he is running would help.

Has he changed the button sounds to clicks or turned them off entirely?? That will help the button response while dialing.

Thanks for the suggesstions guys.

Here's the totally weird part, he hasn't changed anything on the phone. He's only installed one program, MyBible (which I also use and love). The problem showed up before he ever installed that even. Resetting (soft or hard) only helps for a very short time, maybe a coule of hours at best.

I'll tell him to try setting it to answer when the flip is opened and to turn the button clicks off. We'll see if that helps. Otherwise, I've told him to contact Kyocera because up to now he's just been dealing with Verizon and they just keep replacing his phone.

Later,

Cool Cat

I do believe that he has tons of contacts, so maybe that is the problem.

I went into Phone Prefs to check out your suggestion, but under "Display" my only options are for the banner and a check box for Auto-Hyphenation. Do Verizon labeled phones have an additional option for "quick contact match"?

If you go to the display under Phone Prefs, its the second check box. "quick contact match" If its not there, then there may be bigger issues.

My phone doesn't have this option. It is an original AllTell branded 7135 that I bought from GetConnected.com in January '03 and it has never had any flash upgrades or anything. My phone works great. I haven't been able to talk to my brother about the suggestions I've received here yet. I'll report back once we've tried them out on his phone.

Shouldn't hard reset (s) have cleared all the contacts?
I would hard reset, upgrade the software to 44/29 and go from there (with NOTHING extra added to the phone).

Take the problem 7135 to a Verizon store and have them upgrade the firmware to 44/29. (You could do it yourself if you can find the software and ROMs....but if you want to be sure you can get it replaced if you need to, read on.) It's a two part upgrade, so make sure they do both parts! If they screw it up, then it's their fault and they'll have to give you another 7135 at no charge.
