Backupman

I've had my 7135 for about 6 weeks, and as I'm starting to depend on it more and more, I decided it was time to install a backup program. So yesterday, I installed the demo version of backupman. (I also installed OpenChess, datebk5, and the registered version of bebopper).

Good thing that I installed backupman. Today, my system seems to have done a spontanious hard reset.

I had the white screen, and after several minutes, it did not come back to life - so I did a soft reboot. As the system came back up, the Palm icon went into reverse video!! (Black background, yellowish palm icon) and it seemed to freeze. After 5 minutes or so, it had not changed, and so I did another soft reset. Again, I got the reverse video icon, and after a few minutes the system came back up. EVERYTHING WAS GONE - contacts, calendar, etc. (At no time was I prompted to 'erase files').

I went into filemanager, started backupman, and restored from my one backup - it took about 5 minutes, and the system was back to 'normal'. (calendar, contacts, voice training, bible programs, etc. were all restored).

What a relief! I was very pleased!! I'm really glad that I listened to the advice on the forum to not depend on the hotsync, but to get software that will do a backup to the card as well!!

I just completed my first hotsync since the rebuild - and it took a really long time. It was syncing things that it had never synced before (books that I've downloaded for reading, etc). It took a lot longer than normal. Maybe it had to sync the backup as well? I'm not sure.

I just completed a 2nd hotsync, at it was a quick as always.

So, all of this is a long-wiinded way of saying - Thank you for your good advice!! And, if you don't have any backup software, then get something! Backupman is only $10 to register, and I've seen other products listed on this forum as well.

when you made your backup to card, it must have enabeld the 'backup' flag on all the files on the palm. i know if the flag isnt set, they dont get backed up during a hotsync. using a file manager like 'filez' on the palm, or 'syncwizard' on the pc (which lets you manage the palm filesystem) will let you see and set this flag.

That makes sense (setting the backup flag). All of my hotsyncs are running normally now.

I'll certainly be registering backupman!!

Two things surprised me during this process:

1. When I rebooted the unit, I was getting a message that said something similar to "routine maintenance is being performed, no big deal". I had never seen that message before, and all of a sudden I was seeing it on every reboot. I suspect that message is a WARNING - if you see it two times in a row, then make sure you have a good backup!!

2. The Palm icon going into reverse video was interesting. Does that have any signifigance that anyone is aware of?

3. On a side note - it seems that I crash much more often if I have been using avantgo. This is a shame because I REALLY like the service that avantgo provides. Is there an alternative to avantgo? (we might simply be victims of palm os 4.0).

Thanks!
Jim

1) yeah that happens every time you do a hard reset. my best guess is that its copying/decompressing from the firmware flash to the running flash, ie reinstalling itself from the original loadout

2) happened to me once. hard reset fixed it. happened right after i put some new 3rd party software on the phone. needless to say, i didnt put it back on after the hard reset.

3) theres a thread here about that. you might want to check it out. it has tips about avantgo.

also note that your phone shoudl be running palmos 4.1.2, not 4.0. if its anything less, get a software upgrade.

Actually the white screen issue is caused by Backupman. If the flip is closed on my 7135 during a backup with Backupman, when the flip is opened I have the white screen everytime without fail.

All I do is quickly close and reopen the flip and the screen is restored to normal. Other than this small little bug, Backupman has performed flawlessly for me.

Gene,

Thanks for the tip. I have got to admit that I've been getting the white screen for several weeks now. I've only been using backupman for a few days.

In my case, the white screen problem was a warning sign that encouraged me to load a backup program.

There are many threads about the ill effects of using Avantgo on the 7135. When I first got mine, I had to have Avantgo loaded and decided I would put up with the crashes. It didn't take too long to get sick of that. Now, no Avantgo and a much more stable 7135.

How did you get Palm OS 4.1.2 on your phone? I asked Kyocera, and got the following response:

"Any OS updates for the SmartPhone will be provided through firmware updates. The firmware of the 7135 SmartPhone is not user upgradeable. Any updates to the firmware will be released to the affected Wireless Carriers. Once an update is tested by the Wireless Carrier to ensure that it will not disrupt their network, it will then be released and distributed by them to their stores or authorized service centers. "

Backupbuddy and card security

After being on two business trips without any palm data because of a reset I too decided to look into a back up solution. I too downloaded the demo of Backman and will be registering it because it is so easy to use and customize. I have it set to do a backup every morning at 2 am so no matter what I am always packing a recent back up.

My question is this: Will someone be able to use my SD card as a work around to the built in security software that comes with PALM. I'm pretty sure I know the answer to this so my second is does anyone have any 3rd party security solutions that covers the SD card in a convenient and FAST way.

The "builtin" security is not so hot. You should be using some third party security apps for sensitive data.

I don't think there is any FAST way to provide security on an SD card (or on the palm itself -- it takes quite a bit of horse power to do encryption in software). I use BackupBuddy VFS which has an option to encrypt the backup files but I've never used it. The apps I use that deal with sensitive data have some light weight security (actually Passwords Plus has pretty decent security but the others aren't so good) for the files on the Palm. They're already protected before being backed up.

Just slide the little tab on the SD card up to "lock"

Security of backups

Thanks for the info. I downloaded BackupbuddyVFS to give it a trial run. I don't mind if it is a little slow because I will set it up to back up in the middle of the night. Have you tried any third party stuff for general security? I don't trust the built in protection either. I tried a trial version of TealLock, but it really took a long time to do the encryption.

I wonder if there are any security packages that still let the caller id info through if the phone is ringing?

I have the latest firmware mz 1.0.44 and sz 1.0.29. Yet when I click on the Launcher menu item "Options" and then "About Applications" it says Palm Applications v. 4.0. Where do you see v 4.1.2 on your 7135?

FileZ will display "PalmOS: V4.12000"

I believe you are looking at the version of the *Launcher* application and not the OS version. I would expect all the built-in Palm apps to have the same major version number as the OS.

Note that the Memos app is version 1.0 and copywrited to Kyocera instead of Palm. Kyocera must have replaced the built-in Palm memos application (added voice memos).

Checking Version

It's not hard to check to see which version of Palm SW you're running...
From the Launcher pull-down menu select "Info"
Once in "Info" select "Version" (at the bottom).
the second line at the top tells you the version of Palm SW.
and you can see the versions of all installed apps as well.

hope that helped,
-tim

Nobody uses the built-in launcher and info anymore. We all forgot.

Thanks everyone,

As I was re-reading this thread, I realized that I wrote something about Palm OS 4.0. That was a mistake, I meant to write 4.x.

(Specifically, my OS is 4.1.2)

I was merely suggesting that Avantgo might be more stable on any device that is running Palm OS 5.x or higher.

There are other threads on avanto which contain more details, but a few tips seem to be:

1. Always get out of avantgo before closing the flip
2. If you connect directly to avantgo, then don't do anything else until you disconnect from avantgo.
3. If you get a white screen, then close the flip and reopen it.
