Removing Date Book Application

Has anyone successfully removed the Date Book app and replaced it with another? I use the Chapura PocketMirror Pro Calendar app, which allows me to sync to multiple calendars including subfolders and decided to get rid of the built-in Date Book app using JackSprat. Bad idea. Everything worked fine as far as the calendar functions go, but I lost the alarm functionality. They were still set in the calendar, but just wouldn't go off. I had to restore my ROM and rebuild from backup. Thank God for BackupBuddy VFS, except I did finally learn how to lose all my voice dial entries. But, that's another thread......

I didn't remove mine but Datebk5 has an option to handle alarms itself. It installs a "dbAlarm" applet to handle alarms. Actually thats the default setting and if you deselect it then it deletes the dbalarm applet. If Chapura doesn't have a similar option then you will probably have to leave the built-in DateBook app just to handle alarms. Heh, its only 8K.

Well, actually it's 115k, but who's counting. I guess if I have to leave it, it's not that high a price to pay.

My understanding is that it's in ROM, and therefore deleting it doesn't free up any more space on your 7135 anyhow. Is this correct?

Actually, you can use the space if you have a tool that can put things in ROM. I used JackSprat to free up the space and JackFlash to move things into that space.

That's just one app. When I got done deleting stuff I had about 4 MB free in ROM and moved many of my everyday apps into it.

Yes. The challenge is to prioritize all your apps and read only DBs
as to criticality, use, and aggregate size. And some finer asthetic criteria.

For example BackupBuddyVFS is a fine candidate. It must be in RAM to do scheduled backups. It has to be on the card to do the restore if you ever have a hard reset. This leaves the ugly artifact in your launcher display of seeing it twice (the RAM copy and the card copy). Solution: move it to flash and remove it from RAM and the card.

To achieve artistry one first has to maximize the available space in flash followed by utilizing as much of it as possible. I've freed 4.346M in ROM and at one point had it packed leaving only 1K of free flash. ...unfortunately somebody increased one of the apps by 5K with an update and the best I could do with the resulting re-organization was 21K free flash.

Due to the above setback and my hesitation (for no concrete reason) to remove the built-in DateBook app I wouldn't put myself above a "moderately good" rating.

don't try this at home folks,

Never thought of that one.... but then I'd have to remember to move it back to the card if I had to restore my ROM like this past weekend. Way too much for my feeble-minded self to remember! I'll just continue to hide the card app in my unfiled tab in ZLauncher!

I can honestly say that I'm nowhere close to achieving artistry with this app. I've only had my hands on it a couple of days and, so far, I've managed to put myself in a position where I had to wipe everything clean and start over. My Date Book app is in RAM now because of my experiments to find out what was causing the alarms to go south and I can't put it back in ROM without restoring the entire mess again! Tried to flash it, but it said an app with that name was already in ROM.

But all of this playing was not without its benefits. For instance, now I know that I can wipe out all of my voice dial entries even with my BBVFS backup!

Ahhh, I have everything cataloged in SmartListsToGo (relational, calculating, DB). item, version, size, current location, and fields to enable views for "Removed from ROM", "Move to flash", "In flash", "Not in flash" (would be if/when there is room), etc.

You really should be more organized... do you have a PDA?
