I'll confirm what Craig says - this echo occurs about half the time I use the phone, and I've always gathered it's from the communication itself and not the hardware you are using.
In fact, you've probably noticed that when using cell phones period, your voice doesn't arrive at the recipient's ear 'simultaneously', as it does with landlines; you often find yourself interrupting each other when you really weren't talking over one another.
