I've seen posts stating that checking your voice mail by dialing your own cell phones number gets the minutes deducted off mobile to mobile. Whereas, checking voicemail by dialing *86 it gets deducted off peak minutes.
Can anyone verify that this is actually the case???
If you're talking about Verizon, sometimes yes, sometimes no. There has been no consistency with the way it is being handled throughout the country or even in one location. One month, they go to M2M, the next they come out of anytime minutes. If you look through the posts, I believe you'll find one where Verizon said that as of a certain date (somewhere around now) they would be charged against anytime minutes consistently across the country. We'll see.

Actually they claim they are going to be consistent with this now and they will be peak/off-peak NOT mobile to mobile (or In Network as it is now called).
No charge if you check voice mail from a land line.
Originally posted by roadrunner I have the understanding that any number beginning with a * is a free call on Verizon. Is this incorrect?
Yes, that would be incorrect, as they will charge for you to pick up your voice messages via *86.

According to the latest from Verizon, no.

According to the latest from Verizon in both my bill and on their website...no. You will be charged standard minutes for checking voicemail using either your own number or *86. They will NOT fall under In Network (Mobile to Mobile) minutes. I also confirmed this (as much as you can with their cust support.
The answer is no and if you get charged M2M minutes, consider yourself lucky.

Thanks for correcting me.... that's what I meant to say - obviously my fingers hoped for the other!! I went back and edited my response to correct it.

Have to try and stop replying to these posts between meetings, phone calls, etc. while at work.

So, if I call my number from my wife's cell phone (family share plan), would that be M2M? If I have a few extra minutes at the end of the month I'll give it a try.

If you're going to go to all that trouble, why not just use a land-line? That's free also.

After all of these posts, who knows what the real point of this discussion is!

This is slightly off topic, but I have just figured out a neat little hack by programming my password into a speed dial with *86 so that you have one button voicemail (or two button - I use location 11).
Same thing works for Verizon Minutes. Just program *611,,12,zipcode - instant check on available minutes!
