A couple of times now, when I've been in areas with poor reception and the phone is searching off and on, I've gotten a Fatal Exception. It was very annoying to find that my phone hadn't been working for who knows how long until I finally noticed the error.
Has anyone else had this issue? I've since loaded Crash, so it does reset itself, but it's still a pain.

I used to have this problem if I left Eudora as the active app. Do you remember if you had last used Eudora? Anyway, I started making sure that I switched back the launcher before closing the phone, and after that I never had the problems.
No, I don't have Eudora installed, but thanks for the tip. It still could be some other app that's causing this if I leave it open and close the phone. I just haven't been too aware of the app that's running.
After noticing a surge in my number of resets lately, I've decided to rid the pda of Avantgo for the time being to see if that brings some stability. Keepin my fingers crossed.
Many people have probs with AvantGo. I have what I consider a small number of resets, but many seem to be tied to the palm doing something related to the phone and poor phone coverage. I use Energy Saver (thanks David) and that seems to keep the phone off if I go through areas with consistently bad coverage.
Crashes in a poor reception area are something that I’m experiencing. I commented on this in other threads. What seems to be happening (at least I think so) is that signal searching takes over the unit CPU and the app side I/O is being dropped. This is especially true when bouncing back and forth between digital and analog signals.
When this happens the unit stops paying attention to a local app making it look as it if the unit got stuck. In fact it even seems to stop buffering any user input. When the unit does sense a signal and comes back to the app it then gets confused probably because the user input is now all messed up since it was not buffered – and you get a crash.
Lack of buffering is probably an engineering trade off due to the CPU speed limitations and importance of finding a signal (don’t want to loose that call!) vs. servicing Palm app. Simple limitations of the technology.
I learned to wait with additional input (stylus and/or buttons) when an app is not responding and 9 times out of 10 it will come back nicely as soon as a signal is found.
Ya know I was thinking about this. I know the phone pulls a lot more power when its is searching for a signal or is in analog mode. I wonder if when the phone is in that state that the phone pulls too much power from the palm side resulting in an unstable state for the memory or something else on the palm side. Just about every other palm device I've owned didn't like being run on low batteries. Just a thought.

Originally posted by rfreschner Yes, at least since I put Crash on the phone it will reset. How does Energy Saver know when to turn the phone off? And, more importantly, back on?
The way that it works is that it is launched in the background by the OS with a code that tells ES that the phone has lost signal. When ES gets that launch it tells the OS to relaunch it (in the background) after X seconds. When it is relaunched, it turns off the phone. Before the relaunch, if it receives another background launch telling it that the phone has found signal, it tells the OS to cancel the relaunch.
After it turns the phone off, it tells the OS to relaunch it (in the background) after N seconds. When it gets relaunched, it turns the phone back on.
That is basically it. Anytime the phone loses signal, it gets launched, but should only take a millisecond or so. Literally. Similar for when it gains signal. The relaunches (when it turns the phone on or off) take longer, but almost all of that is the time when it the phone is turning on or off. I'm sure that you have noticed that manually turning the phone on or off makes it so that your pda is unusable for a few seconds.

Every time this has happened to me, the phone has been holstered and has had at least two bars left on the battery. Perhaps the Palm side is waking up and trying to execute something. Thanks for the ideas though - certainly some other things to be aware of.
I had the problem you describe (crashing when you lose reception). Basicly when I leave work, I read Avantgo as I walked to the underground garage. I would close the flip as I got near the car while running Avantgo. Since the Garage was underground there was no receptions and frequently my palm would lockup or (soft) reset. I have solved the problem by always returning to the Palm launcher before closing the flip. Now I only reset when I forget to exit Avantgo.
I too have the reset issue when doing a search. Nothing I've been able to remove seems to fix the problem. I do have Eudora WEB installed and would like to remove it. But it does not show up as one of the applications I can delete on teh DELETE screen. How can I remove it?

Thanks for the explanation Dave. Every post I've seen on ES has nothing but good things to say about it, so I'll probably look into using it after I've given the phone a few days to sort things out now that I've removed Avantgo.

I'm not sure if I had actually closed the phone while still in Avantgo or not, but I don't think I did the last time. In any event, I decided to remove it completely for the time being to see if the stability improved. So far, so good!!
Only bad thing is - what the heck am I going to read when I go to the bathroom now!!

It is one of the applications that is stored in ROM, so it won't show up in the Delete listing. There are some posts on the forum that say the beta version of JackFlash will allow you to delete it from ROM. Haven't tried it myself.
