I believe there's been a number of posts in the forum on this recently. It has something to do with making sure the phone and the pda side are turned off before removing the battery. Also, there is something about not hitting the contacts. In any event, if you do a search, I'm sure you'll find it.
If you tap the light bulb button lower right it will turn off the PDA but I'm not sure that this is any different than closing the flip. I've gotten brave and not turned off the palm side and had no problems but quite a few other users seem to swear by turning off the palm side prior to battery swapping.

Here, have a clue. No, take two, they're small.....
I just had this same problem - where I took out the battery and everything was lost. I did have the phone powered off but not the PDA part, so I guess I'll try it again some time in the future and try with the PDA part off. My phone is brand new too...early December - maybe these new phones have this fault?
Unfortunately we have had to discuss in great length (wish it wasn't an issue). Run a quick search and you will see that alot of us have had this happen. To be safe, phone and pda off before the battery comes out. And be careful about how you remove/insert the battery. Do NOT bounce the battery on the contacts or you will be saying hello to Mr. Hard Reset
1. The palm's internal battery needs for the unit to be plugged in in order to charge. Therefore, if one is in the habit of keeping the phone charged up by swapping the battery and charging the other battery in the cradle, but not plugging the phone in, the internal battery may eventually lose enough juice to be ineffective. This is also part of why, when you first get the unit, it's a good idea to leave it plugged in overnight.

2. Tapping the light bulb icon is different from closing the flip:
When you close the flip, if the palm is asleep it actually wakes itself up, although the backlight stays off. If it's not asleep, it remains awake, and the backlight just shuts off. The palm will then go back to sleep after your set timeout (30 secs, 1 min, whatever) has elapsed. Hitting the bulb button simply toggles the sleep/wake state.
Therefore, if you close the flip and immediately start to swap the battery, you've guaranteed that the palm is actually awake. For myself, I always sleep the palm before swapping, which I do by hitting the bulb button and leaving the flip as it is. (Flip is almost always open, as I've just turned the phone off as well.) I have sometimes swapped battery with the palm awake, and never lost data because of it, but I just don't feel like bothering with the risk.
Stupid question I know, but does changing the battery always cause at least a soft reset? I've been a little cautious (ok scared) to remove my battery for fear I would lose all my data and I have never trusted backups. But, I received a spare in the mail today and had to try it. Shut off phone and pda and went for it.... everything ok except soft reset. Seems like you can't do anything with this phone without at least a soft reset.

Not when its plugged in. If you want to avoid the soft reset use either a travel charger or unplug the power from the cradle and plug it into the phone.

Thanks - now that you mention it, I think I might have seen this tip already, but I'm getting overloaded from all the great advice I've found here.
it was suggested that if you turn your phone up side down and remove and/or insert the battery it would solve that problem with the contacts touching. This seems to work for me most of the time.
Time to vent...
If you ask me, this is a serious engineering flaw that Kyocera should be ashamed of. After all, who would even think of turning the phone up side down to replace a battery.... especially when the result is a toal wipe out of your stored information...
Best improvement is the SD card. It makes me wonder if they included this because they knew they were going to cause us users a million problems with hard resets, and would riot if we couldn't "resore" away from our PC's.

Soft reset? If you are experiencing hard resets on a battery change you have some other problem.
The manual makes it clear that you should backup your phone before removing the battery can cause a hard reset. The same thing has happened to me. You need to reinsert it with a quick smooth motion for this not to happen. Otherwise...
gee, and we wonder why Verizon doesn't want to sell this phone any more.
I'm trying hard, and still staying loyal to my 7135, but crap like this makes it very hard. Kyocera should be ashamed.
