blank screen - help! (not BSD?)

Hi all, I've had my 7135 since November 28th and have had no problems whatsoever (no resets, nothing)...until today.

The problem:

When I open the flip, my screen is completely black - no phone, no PDA, nothing. None of the buttons work. (Holding the backlight button does nothing.) *Note that the one line LCD outside the phone still shows the signal strength, time and battery level.

A soft reset (opening the back cover and hitting the reset button) brings it back to life with no data loss, BUT, when I close the flip and let it sit for a while, the same thing happens when I re-open it!

I've search the archives and found the "Black Screen of Death", which I don't think this is because a soft reset brings it back. Anyways...I just did a HARD RESET and restored everything via the backup from my SD card...I closed my flip, let it sit for a few minutes, opened it...SAME thing...completely black screen.

Any ideas or suggestions?
Thanks.

FYI, I have the very basics installed, no hacks, just MinutesPlus, EnergySaver, CardBackup, Quickoffice (from the CD), Bejeweled, Bookworm, and Billiards. I have not installed anything on the phone this past week and the phone has been working fine up until a few hours ago. I Hotsync and charge in the cradle every night. The only thing I did differently last night was I tried the MP3 player that came with the phone...I went to the about screen and played the demo song.

I have the same problem. Tried same things. Still won't wake up every time once flip is closed for a few minutes. Sometimes black, sometimes white. Open/Close a few times and it comes back. Previously, the backlite would not come on until I tapped the back of the display, but that doesn't happen any more with the new problem.

Hope someone has an answer.

Dave

Posted same problem 1 hour apart . . .

Whoops didn't see the PIVIND post. Thought original poster just post his but . . . my problem (a couple of threads up) has been going on for several weeks now but getting more freq. Kyo thought it was software related but at least mine is acting like it's a bad contact in the flip, but I still think it's software related. What ever the internal command tells it to light up when opening flip seems to be the bug. I'll await some responses in the forum but will probably have to bring it to a Verizon store and have the software reflashed. If that doesn't work I'll call Verizon or Kyocera and demand another (unscratched phone). Can't wait till they come out with a new model which will hopefully have corrected these bugs. Of course their new model probably won't work with the 7135's accessories . . . In which case I'll take my phone # and trot off to another provider. I know many have had no problems with their 7135's, but I'm on my 3rd phone now in less than a year. I stick it out because I really like the phone and I waited a year for it to be introduced, but this design really needs software revisions which Kyocera is to slow to respond too!

Try unchecking "Quick Contact Match" under Phone Prefs/Display. I had a problem with the screen coming up white and unresponsive for a few seconds after opening the phone and that solved it.

I wanted to test it for a couple days to make sure it really worked before posting - I'm still here, what I did cured my problems, so here it is in case its helpful to others.

After many resets (soft and hard) and restores (different version within Cardbackup), I was getting the same results - black screen with unresponsive buttons after the flip is closed and the phone sits for a few minutes.

By chance I opened up QuickSheet/QuickWord and noticed that my "categories" contained jumbled characters. A quick uninstall/reinstall seems to have fixed all my problems. I've been problem free for about 4 days now. Woohoo!

I noticed that as well.... I just started playing with Quicksheets... I'll try the uninstall/install trick as well.

Thanks for the info.

My problem with backlight not coming on suddenly went away after trying all the suggestions....I just went to the Verizon store and got a new 7135b. Only had a little problem trying to make it fail while in the store. Had to keep the old battery, though. The new ones are on recall right now and they didn't have replacements. I bought my unit in August, so don't let them give you any 15 day replacement limit BS. If they want you to keep consuming minutes, they won't force you to get a replacement from Kyocera.

Now all I have to do is learn Graffiti2!
