I took the battery out of my phone to read the ESN under it (which I didn't find there anyway). When I replaced it, the phone acted like it did in the store, and all of my data and files and settings were totally gone.
Considering that they sell spare batteries and recommend that you take extra ones with you, is it normal to lose all data when the battery comes out of the phone? Maybe I did it wrong?
Please do a search on these forums, the battery issue has been discussed, well...ad naseum.
Someone can correct me if I am wrong, but I believe the bottom line is to turn off the phone (and turn off the palm to be safe) before changing the battery. BE CAREFUL removing and installing a battery so you do not touch the contacts before the battery is actually seated. This will cause a hard reset.
Also, charge the phone sometimes with the phone side off to charge the internal battery (don't know if this has become fact yet).
Of course lastly, get a backup program and make regular backups so this is only an inconvenience, not a disaster.
Good luck!
Forgot to add: if you are at home or where you have a travel charger, you can plug that in while you change the batteries. It is less stressful.
How long did you have the battery out?
I think the safe limit is 30-seconds, though I would highly recommend that you do like me and swap batteries, etc. as fast as possible. Then you will be fine. I swap batteries almost every day and I have never lost my data from it.

While I think 30 seems to be the generally accepted time by the people on this forum, it is kind of funny when you compare it to this quote from the Owner's Manual:
Quote:
A built-in backup battery maintains the clock settings and data for an additional 45 minutes after the residual energy in the battery is depleted or if the battery is removed.

I disagree that time is of the essence when swapping batteries. I just tested mine for 5 minutes without a battery and didn't lose a single bit of data. The important thing is to turn off the phone, close the flip and avoid double bouncing the battery contacts.
While I had the battery removed I poked around a bit inside. I noticed a small rubber plug/cover just opposite the reset button. It pulls right out if you can get your fingernail under it and there is what looks like a little shiny button or even a little orfice under there. Anyone know what it is?
i noticed something the other day while on a call...
my battery was running low, low enough for the 'low battery' warnings to begin...
i do have an extra battery and as i was about to tell my friend that i would call back in a minute, it occurred to me that i might be able to plug the phone in directly and then swap the battery...
IT WORKED!
apparently the charger is able to power the phone without the battery installed and my call did not disconnect and i was able to replace my battery and continue with my conversation...
Funny thing happened yesterday... I usually am hit and miss with loosing data on battery removal. Yesterday I actually tried to do a hard reset by removing the battery. I was making sure I hit the contacts etc. I couldn't get it to reset! Maybe I do something different when I am worried about loosing data. When I wanted to loose the data, I couldn't get it to do it. I ended having to do the traditional hard reset (reset/backlite).
along with powering the phone off and putting the palm side to "sleep" it was aslo mentioned on this forum that the internal capacitor/battery (whatever you want to call it) will only recharge while plugged into a charger. If all you do is swap to fully charged batteries then the internal capacitor will never recharge since it doesn't recharge from the battery.
I also tried once to do a hard reset using the battery because I had a brain fart and couldn't remember how to do a hard reset. needless to say after 10 MINUTES of screwing around with the battery I remembered how. funny it must some how know that when I don't want to loose any data it does a hard reset, and when I want to do a hard reset it does nothing. If only I can tell the phone that it has it all backwards.
Just FYI, when I went into the local Verizon office with exactly this complaint, the tech told me it was a "known issue" with the old software. He took my 7135 for roughly 30 minutes, and there was no more data loss problem when he brought it back!
I charge my phone on either the car or the A/C power adapter every night, and switch batteries every Sunday morning.

Your software must have been really old because I'm running the stuff that came with my phone and I don't have any data loss issues. My software is:
